  • Hemp connects Kentucky’s past to its future

This week Americans celebrate Hemp History Week. Here in Kentucky, we know industrial hemp is a crop that connects our past to our future.
A quick survey of the crop’s history proves it is time for us to make our own mark on hemp history and allow it to flourish.
The history of the United States is entwined with hemp’s history. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson are believed to have grown hemp on their farms.
In the 1800s, Speaker of the House and later Sen. Henry Clay grew hemp on his farm in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky.

Looking back, it seems that Cynthiana and Harrison County must have been on auto pilot. We just soared through the day to day business and never gave thought to the fact that our little slice of heaven was stalling out.
However, in the last couple of years we have gained momentum and are ready to lift our wheels off the ground.
I’m so excited about the prospects for our community.
There have been many events that have held us together these past years and have kept our name out there.

It will be interesting to see how the Dollar General Store proposal in northern Harrison County plays out.
Last week the Cynthiana-Harrison County-Berry Joint Planning Commission denied a request to grant a zoning change that would allow the small business to be located on the corner of US 27 and Blackburn Lane.
The commission’s reasoning is that those who requested the zoning change failed to provide solid evidence that a zoning change would provide a positive economic impact for the county.

Just look around, there are caps and gowns floating up and down aisles in schools and colleges all across this country. Yes, even right here in our own river city, Cynthiana.
Since I just arrived home this evening from attending the Licking Valley Campus graduation, I am full of success stories about students I know who walked across the stage. And there are just as many stories about those students that I did not get to know as we attended classes on the hill.

Congratulations to Tomi Jean Clifford for the honors that are coming her way.
She is thinking big for Cynthiana and Harrison County with her plans for the coming Hemp Days.
Two weeks ago at the regular fiscal court meeting, she said she hoped that the inaugural Hemp Days, scheduled for Saturday, June 9, will evolve into something as big, or bigger than long-standing events that other communities have.
Even though our celebration is just one day, Hemp Days, which is plural, might give some indication as to her thinking.
