  • Mary E. Whitaker Lowe, 94

    Mary E. Whitaker Lowe, 94, who spent 38 years joyfully teaching public school third graders, died in her sleep early Thursday, March 8, 2012 in her apartment at Morning Pointe senior care center.
     Mary Elizabeth, also known as “Libby,” was fiercely independent until breaking a hip 18 months ago. She stopped driving and subsequently learned to accept aid from many people, as she weakened physically in a decade-plus fight with congestive heart disease. In mind and spirit she was feisty to the last day.

  • Garnett C. Smiley, 82

    Garnett C. Smiley, 82, of Cynthiana, died Thursday, March 8, 2012, at his residence.
    He was born in Harrison County, Ky., Nov. 22, 1929, to the late Clarence and Elsie Fryman Smiley. He was a member of Robinson Chrisitan Church, a retired farmer and an honorably discharged Army veteran of the Korean Conflict where he received a Bronze Star.
    He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wendell Smiley and Lowell Smiley.

  • Michael Paul Spedden, 68

    Michael Paul Spedden, 68, Cynthiana, died Friday, March 9, 2012 at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.
    He was born in Baltimore City, Md., Jan. 22, 1944, to the late Daniel Edward Spedden and Clara Stella Prutznel. He was a retired Bell South employee and a United States Navy Vietnam veteran.
    He was preceded in death by a special friend, Grace Metcalf.

  • Anna Russell Faulconer, 98

    Anna Russell Faulconer, 98, of Cynthiana, Ky., died Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at Cedar Ridge Healthcare Campus.
    She was born in Harrison County, Ky., Oct. 16, 1913, to the late Jesse Henry and Caroline Swinford Faulconer. She was a member of Cynthiana Christian Church.
    Survivors include: one sister, Georgia Schmidt; two nephews, Gene (Frannie) Faulconer and John (Sherry) Faulconer; one niece, Leigh Ann (Chuck) Jackson; several great-nieces and nephews; and great-great-nieces and nephews.

  • Hallena Rose Sosby McKenney, 86

    Hallena Rose Sosby McKenney, 86, of Cynthiana, Ky., died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, at University of Kentucky Medical Center.
    She was born in Harrison County, Ky., March 9, 1925, to the late William Alexander and Myrtle Earlywine Sosby. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
    She was preceded in death by a sister, Ella Mae Riggle, two brothers, William Sosby and Frazier Sosby and a great-grandson.

  • Virgie Mae Ellis Sturgeon, 84

    Virgie Mae Ellis Sturgeon, 84, widow of William Sturgeon, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012 at Johnson-Mathers Nursing Home.
    She was the daughter of Huey and Monty Ellis.
    Survivors include: a son, Charles Sturgeon of Paris; and a daughter, Brenda Fryman of Carlisle.
    Services were  held Friday, March 2 at Mathers-Gaunce Funeral Home with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

  • Manley Ammerman Norris Jr., 84

    Manley Ammerman Norris Jr., 84, Cynthiana, died Saturday, March 3, 2012 at Harrison Memorial Hospital.
    He was the son of the late Manley Ammerman and Isabel Rosie Norris.
    Survivors include: his wife, Florence Smith Norris; two sons, Charles Norris, New York and Richard Norris, Cynthiana; and two daughters, Sally Brandenburg, Cynthiana and Debra Manley, New York.
    Funeral services will be Saturday, March 10 at 1 p.m. at Ware Funeral Home with visitation at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Lower Curry Cemetery.
     

  • William Giles, 56

    William Giles, 56, Cynthiana, died Saturday, March 3, 2012 at his residence.
    He was raised by Harry and Lizzy Stanfield of Cynthiana.
    Survivors include: a son, Billy Giles, Cynthiana; and a daughter, Starla (Marvin Foxx) Shields, Cynthiana.
    Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Living Hope Assembly of God.
    Ware Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
     

  • Jolene Ferguson, 69

    Jolene Ferguson, 69, of Dry Ridge, Ky., died Saturday, March 3, 2012 in Georgetown.
    She is survived by her husband, Johnny H. Ferguson of Dry Ridge; two daughters, Kim Parr of Corinth, Ky. and Madeline Walker of Georgetown; one son, Greg Stubbs of Cynthiana; one stepdaughter, Darlene Johnson of Dry Ridge; and one stepson, Johnny Ferguson of Corinth.
    Services will be Tuesday, March 6 at 3 p.m. at McDaniel Funeral Home, Corinth, with visitation from 1-3 p.m. Burial will be in Raven Creek Cemetery, Harrison County.
     

  • Linda Workman Essinger, 59

    Linda Workman Essinger, 59, Brooksville, Ky., died Sunday, March 4, 2012 at her residence.
    She was the daughter of the late Reemer and Mary Elizabeth Moford Workman.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Essinger.
