  • USDA hardiness zones are hot and cold

    Cold Hardiness
    The USDA Hardiness Zone Map has long been a guideline for cold hardiness of plants; about every 10 years it is revised in order to provide a bit more detail in our changing climate.
    The most recent map was revised in January of 2012 and is based on temperature information from 1976 through 2005.

    Births announced this week are: Caitlyn Nicole Byers, Nov. 19, daughter of David and Andrea Byers; Lily Paige Waechtler, Jan. 9, daughter of Kasey Moore and Brandon Waechtler.
    The city will now be testing sirens on a weekly basis. They were tested once a month.
    HCHS bowlers honor seniors in final home match of the season; Breds shoot to win against Prestonsburg; Breds’ grapplers dominate Bourbon, Capital City Classic; Defense wins for traveling Fillies.

  • Strawzell-Ward exchange vows

    Kelsi Brown Strawzell, daughter of Steve and Rhonda Strawzell of Cynthiana, and Jonathan Ashley Ward, son of the late Wayne Ward and Renee and Ashton Page of Alexandria, Louisiana, were united in marriage on Nov. 4, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Cynthiana. Pastor Chuck Cooper, uncle of the bride, performed the double-ring ceremony.
    Emily Spencer and Dwayne Gillespie, cousins of the bride, provided music.

  • Succulents for indoor bloom

    Plant collectors have long appreciated orchids and African violets for their winter bloom cycle.  
    I have amassed a collection of both and they help me get through the winter with their colorful interest. But violets and orchids are not the only classes of plants that can deliver in the winter; think succulents.

    She weighed 8 lbs. 1 oz., and is welcomed by her brother, Kennedy Reyes, and sister Adalynne Kiskaden.
    Maternal grandparents are Ronald and Connie Kiskaden of Cynthiana; maternal great-grandparents are Janet Kiskaden and the late Ronald Kiskaden.
