    • Log Cabin, Sept. 4 1914—(From the story about the new post office on Walnut Street) “Inspector’s Scret Gallery, a long narrow gallery extending across shutters, enabling an inspector to see every employee in the office without himself being seen. A passage leads from the gallery to the basement. An inspector may therefore enter the secret passage either from the basement or from the second floor, without being seen by any office employee.”
(Rather amazing, but the secret passage truly existed—2015 location of Whalen and Company.

  • Short days, cool nights initiate bloom for holiday cacti

When attempting to grow tropical plants we are met with the challenge of mimicking their native habitat which is difficult inside our homes. We can allow Mother Nature to take care of some of this, outside, for now.
Move some of your orchids, holiday cacti and Clivia outdoors for the remainder of the season because we can initiate bloom by naturally managing day length and night-time temperatures.
The flowering of many plants (including some native species) is initiated by how many hours of light and dark the plant receives in a 24-hour period.
