For the past few years, Christmas hasn’t felt merry.
We’ve had some family struggles -- what family hasn’t at times? -- that have put a damper on our desire to celebrate. We didn’t even put up our Christmas tree the past two years.
However, this year my husband surprised me by bringing the tree down from the attic the day after Thanksgiving while I was at work.
He sent me a photo, which flipped a switch in my head. It hit a “hope” spot inside me, and I couldn’t wait to decorate it.

  • The Christmas Story according to Luke

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register.

Just a reminder that City on a Hill Church is no longer meeting at the old Berry Lumber Co. Building. We are now holding services every Sunday in the Community room at the Cynthiana-Harrison County Public Library.
Connect time is 9-9:45 a.m. for some recreation and Bible Study for our youth with the youth Pastor. Adults will also meet for fellowship in the community room at these times. Service will begin at 10 a.m. with live worship. Come as you are and worship with us.

  • From cowardice to courageous

As leadership shifted from Moses to Joshua, God spoke to Joshua seven times about his character either directly or through Moses that Joshua was to be strong and courageous (Deuteronomy 31:6, 31:7, 31:23; Joshua 1:6, 1:7, 1:9, 1:18). The book of Genesis indicates that seven is the number of completion (seven days of creation). God does not tell Joshua to be responsible or loving, honest or forthright.

During the entire time I was pregnant with my youngest daughter nearly 35 years ago, my husband was also unemployed.
Back then, I carefully budgeted every cracker, every bowl of Cheerios, every ounce of milk, with absolutely no wiggle room.
One day after a trip to the market I grabbed one too many grocery bags out of the car to bring inside to our apartment and a plastic gallon jug of milk dropped and splattered all over the sidewalk.
Despite the adage, “Don’t cry over spilled milk,” I cried.

Here’s something to chew on with your morning coffee: What if being better -- sinning less, doing more good than bad -- isn’t God’s primary goal in the lives of Christians?
And, what if our struggle with sin (sin being another word for trying to do life by our own power and following our own individual bent and moral compass) -- what if that internal tug-o-war between wanting to please God and wanting to please ourselves isn’t a sign of spiritual failure but is really a sign of spiritual health?

  • If we could do things over again...

    By Don Powell, Gideons

How many times have you pondered over the question, “What would I do If I could do things over again?”  Have you ever heard someone say, “If I could only have a second chance at life, I would do things differently?” Maybe you have said or thought these words yourself.
I suppose everyone of us have had those moments of hind sight and/or regret. We wish we had said or done things differently. But, we always find out too late that time moves on and we can’t go back and change things or do things over.
