A number of weeks ago, I injured my left knee.
It had been months since I had gone to the Y to exercise and I had finally  decided it was time to go back.
I bought new exercise clothes and talked to the wellness director for even  more motivation.
    I was psyched.
On a Wednesday afternoon I got to the Y 45 minutes before the Strong by Zumba class started so I could walk on the treadmill first.

  • God created you to soar

I stand amazed watching birds fly. Why do the buzzards lift their wings at about a 15-degree angle from their body as they soar, while a hawk keeps his wings flat, parallel with the surface of the ground?
I notice the hummingbird flapping its wings faster than I can even keep clear while the great blue heron seems to lift and thrust her wings in slow motion.

  • Talk about a Royal Wedding...

As I write this, I am preparing to head out of town, heading south for about 10 hours to see my eldest daughter get married.
I really like weddings. Not enough to get up at 5 a.m. to watch one that took place in England recently, but I have been to a few since I often have the privilege to officiate at them and I have grown quite fond of them.
It’s not the romance or pageantry or the beauty of the bride that causes me to like them. I have been a pastor and married long enough to know that marriage is as difficult as it can be wonderful.

A number of years ago I wrote a story about a man who was as lost as a soul could be.
When I met him, he was a pastor, although he didn’t look like a typical pastor, if there is such a thing.
I remember his shaved head and “ROUGH” tattooed across the back of his neck. I also remember thinking he was one scary looking dude.
His wasn’t a sanitized, heartwarming story, although it started out that way.

Sometimes you go to church and you hear the same stuff over and over.
Sometimes it flies over your head or you’re thinking about what’s for lunch and the pastor sounds like the teacher in the Charlie Brown cartoons going, “Waah, waah, waah,” and you have no idea what he said.
And sometimes you hear something that you’ve heard before but for some reason it’s like you’re hearing it for the first time. Or maybe it’s the thing that you needed to hear precisely at that moment.

  • Maybe it’s time to stop carrying rocks

I love backpacking. The thought of putting 40 pounds of food and gear on your back and traipsing 50 miles through the wilderness doesn’t appeal to everyone, but to me, it’s one of my favorite things to do.
When I was in my early 20’s, I went backpacking in New Mexico with a bunch of scouts to Philmont Scout Ranch.  A great group of guys.
