    I love watching TV shows where an expert comes to a person’s home or business in dire need and helps them turn around.
    Sometimes the expert yells at the person and the person pushes back, resenting the expert’s help, and it’s all high drama on camera. Bad words bleeped out, someone walks out in a huff, sometimes the whole thing is called off.
    Sometimes it ends with the person undoing whatever good the expert has done, which is usually a mistake because at the end of the show you find out that two months later the business is no longer in business.

    PLEASANT GREEN BAPTIST
    Vacation Bible School
    Vacation Bible School: Old Time Religion, will be held July 29-Aug. 1, 5:30 p.m. - supper; VBS from 6-8:15 p.m.
    Classes available for littles to 5th grade, 6th grade and up will help lead.
    Sunday Funday is Aug. 1 with a service, picnic, water slide and ice cream.
    The church is located at 387  CR-1231, Cynthiana.

    Victory Baptist Church will hold a fish fry and coney dog sale on Saturday, Aug. 3 beginning at 10:30 a.m.

  • He has made his wonders to be remembered

    During our last celebration of America service at church we said the pledge to the American Flag, but also included the pledge to the Christian Flag and the pledge to the Bible. I wasn’t surprised when many could not remember the words to the Christian Flag and to the Bible because for most it was only done at Vacation Bible Schools. However, I was amazed at the number of people who had forgotten part or most of the Pledge of Allegiance.

    When there aren’t any words yet invented to describe all of life’s strangeness, I just call it “life-ish” -- life is life-ish.
    Life isn’t predictable. It’s not stable or same. About the only thing you can count on is that one day you might cry and the next day you might laugh, sigh, gasp and scream all in the same 24 hours.
    That’s life-ish.

  • Unconditional or transactional?

    In Job 1, God invited Satan to consider his servant Job as one who loves and serves God. Satan replies with this line, “Does Job love and serve God for nothing?”
    Satan was claiming that the only reason Job loved and served God was because God protected him from calamity and blessed him with prosperity. Satan was suggesting that the only reason humans love and serve God and others is because they get something in return.

    About five years ago, I started attending an addiction support group for family members and friends.
    Although I didn’t have an addiction to a substance, I quickly discovered I did have an addiction to my “qualifier,” the person who is the reason I was there.
    Each week at this meeting, we’d sit around a table, and in front of us were stand-up cards with various slogans written on them such as “One day at a time” and “Easy does it.”
    The one that was always in my line of vision: “Let go and let God.”

  • Reconciling Christianity with the ideals of America’s government

    “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” -- The Declaration of Independence.
    Last week our nation celebrated the anniversary of the writing of those words. Mind you, it wasn’t the anniversary of achieving those, that would take several wars, the abolition of slavery and decades of struggle for equality that is going on to this day.
