  • Grace Notes

Recently, I attended a leadership summit with a slate of world-class, successful leaders as speakers.
Most, if not all, talked about their failures and how they value them.
Bear Grylls, a British former SAS serviceman and survivalist who once climbed Mt. Everest, talked about how he failed his first attempt at joining the elite SAS and how it only made him work harder and made him a better soldier.

  • Bells invited to ring Aug. 25 to remember 400 years of slavery

The National Park Service has invited communities nationwide and churches of all faiths to have a ceremonial bell-ringing this Sunday, Aug. 25 at 3 p.m. to honor and commemorate the landing 400 years ago of the first African people who were brought to Virginia as slaves.
The Park Service has asked that bells ring for 15 minutes. Other groups have asked for four minutes in commemoration of the 400 years since 1619 of what would become African slavery in the United States.

  • Grace Notes

For the past several months I’ve been helping out a friend by posting inspirational content on a Facebook page she started called A Place of Grace, for people who struggle with drug addiction and also for their families.
Every day I search the internet for messages of hope and encouragement for those who feel especially hopeless and discouraged, words and images that might help broken and struggling people.

  • Do you have a dollar?

    By Don Powell, Gideons

I stopped for gas one evening and as I started pumping my gas, I was approached by a young man who asked if I could give him a dollar.
By the clothes he was wearing, I immediately assumed he was needing the money to buy drugs or alcohol. I told him I didn’t have any money and went back to pumping my gas. He walked away from me and sat on the edge of the sidewalk in front of the service station.

I’ve been following a spirited discussion among several of my newspaper’s anonymous “Sound Off” callers.
If I’m following this correctly, it started with someone being appalled that people drink mimosas (champagne and orange juice) in a restaurant at 9 a.m. on a Sunday.
Another caller is appalled that the first caller is appalled and says that caller should be in church and not in a restaurant anyway.

  • Discipleship is more caught than taught

Several years ago, I read a quote by Christian author John Maxwell that said, “Leadership is more caught than taught.” I liked it and decided to adapt it to say “Christian discipleship is more caught than taught.”
