  • When is gamesmanship cheating

The letter of the law is rarely followed these days, which is the way that it has been in sports forever. But when does outsmarting the opponent while on the edge, or over the edge, of rule breaking become cheating and not simply gamesmanship?
Many parts of sports are taught to be skirting the rules yet are accepted as “just the way it is done.”
An example would be teaching a blocker in football to hold in a slick manner so as not to be seen by the officials, rather than block the legal way.
