  • Baseball Breds begin season with...

    Harrison County began defense of the 38th District baseball title Thursday afternoon with a 10-0 win over district rival Pendleton County.  
    The Breds were never threatened in this five-inning affair as pitchers Jordan Riley, the starter, Nolan Brossart and John King allowed only two hits to the Wildcats.  
    Pendleton County only got two runners past first base in the game and none farther than second.  
    Harrison County struck with two runs in the second on the first of King’s three hits, this one a two-run homer.

  • Tennis team sees good year ahead...

    Ron Markley and Austin Dacci are in their first year as head coaches of the Harrison County High School tennis teams.  
    Dacci is coaching the Fillies and Markley the Thorobreds as they enter into the tennis season.  
    Last week was the first week of competition and already the coaches like what they see in the young but somewhat experienced squad.  
    The Thorobreds have the bare minimum number of players, but Markley doesn’t see that as a real problem.

  • Track season begins with...

    The Harrison County Track team began the quest to return in large numbers to the state meet in Louisville on Saturday as they competed in the Woodford County All Comers in Versailles.
    The Fillies had some excellent performances, especially in the hurdles and relays along with good performances in some of the field events.
    Coach Danny Simpson noted, “We were blessed by warm weather in the ‘Luck of the Irish Meet’ especially considering the preparation that we have been able to work in.  The cold has hamstrung our preparation time.”

  • How bad do you have to be not to...

    There are more than 119 teams playing in a post season tournament of some kind beginning this Tuesday.  
    Among these teams, three have an overall losing record.  The worst of these is Liberty of the Big South Conference who won their conference tournament and enters the NCAA tournament with a 15-20 record.  
    Texas of the Big 12 and Purdue of the Big Ten are the two others with losing marks.  They are both playing in the third tier tournament the College Basketball Invitational or the CBI.

    Alumni football coming back
    for second year in April
    Gridiron Alumni has announced that it will be coming back to Kentucky again this year for another series of exciting alumni football.  
    This year on Friday, April 5, the Harrison County alumni will again take on the Bourbon County Pride team. Game time will be released at a later date along with more information about the two teams.  
    The next night, the event travels to Montgomery County where the alumni from Montgomery County and Clark County will do battle.

  • Baseball region seen as wide...

    When a team has a 30-10 record and is region runners up, most programs would say “great job.”  
    Harrison County’s Head Coach Mac Whitaker, while proud of the effort, was quick to point out what could have been done better.  
    “Last year we could not score with people on base,” lamented the veteran coach.  “This year we have to improve on that and play without errors.”
    The Thorobreds lost four starters and a key reserve from last year’s team plus a left-handed reliever.

  • Fillies track has high hopes as...

    “We return several good runners from last year and have added some new ones,” said Coach Danny Simpson. “We could be, with hard work and some good fortune, the best team that has been here for a while.”
    The Fillies finished fourth in the region last season only one point out of third.  
    They lost dominant shot put and discus performer, Natasha Ingram, to graduation along with runners Katelyn Horschler and Cindy Rognstad and fellow discus thrower Beth McKinney.

  • It was a great state tournament...

    The just completed Kentucky High School Boys’ State Tournament was one of the better attended of all time and had some great basketball games.  
    The games, for the most part, were well played with a lot of drama including an overtime game on Friday between Holmes and Madison Central, which left the fans of the two teams with their stomachs tied in knots.  
    Of course, the championship game was won with two seconds left on the clock and will go down as one of the grand finishes in the great tournament’s tradition.
