  • Why some names and not others

When I write the sports news, I am often amused and confused about the nicknames and mascots of high schools and colleges.
Most, if not all of you, are aware of the politically correct crowds dabbling in making school mascots completely milk toast and bland so as not to offend the most sensitive whiner in the country.
They have failed miserably with this though they did manage to change Marquette University from the Warriors, which is in no way offensive, to the Golden Eagles. Yet, the Golden State NBA team is still the Warriors.

The annual Alumni Night with the Fence of Fame presentations is scheduled for Friday night when the Breds face the Conner Cougars of the Ninth Region.
The Alumni Night festivities include former players participating in a modified home run derby and batting practice.  All former players are encouraged to come up and take a few swings.  Coach Mac Whitaker assures batters that pitches will be down the middle at a reasonable speed.

It looked like the Fillies were going to give a gift to Montgomery County Tuesday night as they entered the seventh inning trailing 15-7.  The visiting Harrison County squad had committed seven errors in the first four innings of the game and allowed the host Lady Indians to score 13 runs with only five of them earned.

The Harrison County Middle School Colts faced one of the top teams in the region on Tuesday when Lexington Christian Academy came to the Hilltop for an Eighth Grade Night match.
LCA is the number one-seeded team in the Bluegrass Conference and Harrison County was a decided underdog.   However, with a valiant effort from the entire squad the Colts lost by a narrow 1-0 score.

The Harrison County Thorobreds lost the opening game of the Harrison Memorial Hospital/McDonald’s Baseball Classic Friday as they allowed eight unearned runs in losing to Newport Central Catholic 12-4.
A ten-run sixth inning with only two earned runs was the downfall for the Breds.  Lexington Christian Academy defeated South Oldham 4-1 in the nightcap Friday of the rain-shortened Classic.
