  • Let’s let everyone play

It seems like each week I need to comment on something before I get into my topic and this week is no exception.
The University of Kentucky’s basketball scrimmages being played in the Bahamas has a real local flavor.
All six games will be officiated by Harrison County natives John Hampton, Brent Hampton and Bart Lenox.  The three began their “tough” assignment Sunday and will finish this Sunday.

Maroon-White game shows defense ahead of offense
Both the Maroon and White defenses proved to be the dominant force for their teams as the Maroon-White scrimmage managed only one score during the semi-live scrimmage Friday night on Lawson Field.
The Ingles Stadium controlled battle was a demonstration of the fact that defense usually is ahead of offense in the early part of the season.
Coach Jim Carr said he was disappointed at first as the scrimmage went on, but after viewing the film he felt better about the effort.

  • Three inducted Saturday night to...

Ronald K. “Butch” Ritchie, John Daniel Herrington and Dr. Chris Kerns were inducted into the Harrison County High School Football Hall of Fame Saturday night in a ceremony held in the high school cafeteria.
Jim Swinford, who served as emcee for the evening, presented a special recognition plague to Dr. Brian Mulberry. Mulberry, in his brief remarks, encouraged those in attendance to come to the aid of young people whenever possible.
“This is a tough time to be a kid,” he noted.

  • Maroon/White Game Friday in...

The annual Maroon/White game for the Harrison County Thorobreds will be played this Friday evening on Lawson Field in Ingles Stadium.
The game will begin at 7 p.m. with live play between evenly matched squads.
Coach Jim Carr was not sure of the exact format for the scrimmage but said that there will be a lot of players seeing action.

  • Harrison County volleyball has...

Coach Bill Faulkner greeted large numbers for the 2014 volleyball season as 27 players make up the JV/varsity roster.
    That is the good news.
The not-so-good news is that only three of the players returning have any varsity experience to speak of and what experience they have is not in the position they are scheduled to play this year.
