  • Tumska and Markley qualify for...

    Harrison County High School juniors Sofia Tumska and Jacob Markley each finished fourth in the regional competition to qualify for the state championships next week at the University of Kentucky courts.  
    Coach Ron Markley was overjoyed with the team’s performance.  
    “We won every one of our opening matches,” said Markley. “Everyone advanced to at least the second round and four of our players went to at least the third before losing.”

  • Track teams finish season strong...

    The Harrison County High School Thorobreds and the Fillies completed the 2013 track regular season last week with a Tuesday meet at Scott County and a Saturday meet in Lexington at Bryan Station.
    The Thorobreds will be going into the regional this Saturday with a couple of strong showings behind them as they won the 11-team boys’ meet at Scott County and finished fourth in the 11-team meet on Saturday.
    Saturday’s meet had four of the Lexington schools as well as Scott County and Western Hills among others in the highly competitive meet.

  • Violence in sports, how long...

    I spent Monday this week working in Indiana, which gives me a lot of time to listen to the radio while in the car.
    I listen mainly to sports radio but now and then will venture over to the news, which generally depresses me so I don’t listen for any long periods of time.
    Monday the news had quite a bit about the soccer official who was killed when an irate player hit him in the side of the head and killed him on April 27 in Utah.

    Bluegrass Warhorses to hold
    tryouts/season tickets on sale now
    The first-ever open player tryout for the newly established Bluegrass Warhorses Indoor Football team will be held on June 1 at Toyota Stadium in Georgetown. Players at all positions will be evaluated at the tryouts including kickers. Registration for non-kickers is at 10 a.m. with the kickers signing in at 11 a.m.

  • Fillies error away Tuesday game...

    When your team outhits the opponent 13 to eight and your power hitter hits two home runs the chances of winning should be pretty good.  
    However, when your team makes nine errors in eight innings your fortunes probably won’t be as good.  
    That was the case Tuesday night for the Fillies as they traveled to Montgomery County and dropped a 7-6 verdict in eight innings.

  • Fillies win McDonald’s Thorobred...

    The Harrison County Fillies won four times this weekend en route to the championship of the McDonald’s/Thorobred Sportswear Tournament.  Williamstown, Taylor County, Somerset, and the Lady Royals of Mason County were the worthy opponents of the Fillies and each came up on the short end of the score.  
    The tournament featured teams from four regions as the Grant County Lady Braves were also involved in the round robin style tournament.
