    2010-11 HCHS cheerleaders selected

Youth is the focus for the Harrison County High School cheerleading squad for the coming school year. Ten of the 18 members of the squad are freshmen and sophomores for a young yet experienced squad.

  • Chasteen fans 15 Colonels,...

The Harrison County Thorobreds wrapped up the 10th Region title Thursday night in Winchester with a 6-2 victory over the Bourbon County Colonels.

Harrison County takes a 32-4 record into the Sweet Sixteen at Applebee’s when they face Clay County of the 13th Region Tuesday June 15 at 8:30 p.m.

An allotment of tickets for Harrison County’s first round game in the Forcht Bank/KHSAA State Baseball Championships went on sale at the front office of the high school on Monday, June 7. The tickets will be on sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. thru Friday June 11.

  • Fillies in region final as they...

The Harrison County Fillies advanced to the 10th Region championship game with a 10-5 victory over Montgomery County Tuesday night.

The Fillies had defeated Mason County 22-6 on Monday to move to the semi final match up with Montgomery County.

The Mason County game was close until the Fillies batted in the bottom of the first.  Mason County had scored an unearned run in the top of the first off starting pitcher Courtney Wiggins when the Fillies jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the opening stanza.

  • Fillies pitching coach Philpott...

There will be an empty spot in the corner of the Harrison County Fillies dugout next season and a bucket seat missing an occupant.

After a total of 15 years of high school softball coaching, most spent as a pitching coach, Gary Philpott has decided that the past year was his last.

The 15 years of softball coaching in high school is only the tip of the iceberg as far as Philpott’s coaching career goes.

  • Hatfield named First Team All...

Harrison County senior shortstop Rachel Hatfield has been selected by the coaches of Kentucky as First Team All State in Class AA.

Hatfield joins nine other players from Class AA on the first team.

She is the only 10th Region player to make the first team.  Teammate senior Kaitlyn Shepherd was named honorable mention AA All State to make two all state players from the Fillies’ roster.

  • If the conferences all realign,...

Here is my idea for realigning the conferences.

There would be four conferences. One for the student athletes, two for kind of middle of the road schools and one for pro’s in waiting.

First, the student athlete conference.  Some teams are obvious: Vanderbilt, Northwestern and Duke would make up the core of the actual student athlete conference along with Stanford.

  • New track facility something to...

We may be bragging too much, but I doubt it.

The Harrison County Athletic Complex is just a really good track facility which is a fact, not a boast.

I spent the entire regional track meet Saturday in the broiling sun watching some outstanding performances and also watching the reaction of the visiting athletes and coaches.

  • Breds trounce St. Pat 14-2, move...

The Harrison County Baseball Breds jumped all over Maysville St. Patrick Monday afternoon and advanced in the 10th Region Tournament by a 14-2 margin.

Eric Sanders started the run production when he doubled in the bottom of the first and score on Jared Martin’s single.

The onslaught was in full force in the bottom of the second as the Breds scored nine runs on seven hits, two walks and two St. Patrick errors.  Hunter Hill, Matthew Dye each had run-scoring doubles and Josh Moss, Christian Chasteen and Shane Fowler each drove in runs with singles.

  • Ashbrook signs with White Sox,...

Former Harrison County Thorobred and Morehead State Eagle star J.D. Ashbrook signed Monday with the Chicago White Sox.

Head area scout for the White Sox, Phil Gulley, was in Cynthiana Monday morning to sign Ashbrook at Biancke’s Restaurant downtown.

Ashbrook is to head immediately to Bristol, Va., to check in Wednesday, June 16, for a four day mini-camp before the season gets underway on June 22.

  • Fillies fall to Clark in region...

The Harrison County Fillies ended a spectacular season last Wednesday night as they fell in the region championship game, 11-2, to George Rogers Clark.

The 32-9 Lady Cards advance to the state championship in Owensboro this Friday to face 29-11 Ashland Paul Blazer.

The Fillies’ season ended with a 31-8 record.
