  • Breds, Fillies make showing in...

    The Harrison County doubles team of Seth Barnes and Hank Whalen are the only local entrants still alive in the boys and girls regional tennis tournament at Georgetown College. Weather permitting, the two Harrison County seniors played in the third and fourth rounds on Wednesday, and if successful, will play in the finals this afternoon.

    The Breds duo, third seeded in the tournament, had little trouble in their first round on Monday. After a first round bye, they dispatched Jacob Heller and Harrison Applegate of St. Patrick in the second round, in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

  • Brossart ends Breds 8-game...

    Brandon Martins first-inning two-run double and third inning RBI double appeared to be the impetus that would drive the Harrison County Thorobreds to their ninth straight win in high school baseball. That did not prove to be the case on Tuesday night in Northern Kentucky, however.

    HCMS girls track and field team

    finish seventh at Dunbar

    The evening started with a fourth place finish in the 4x800 with a time of 11:54, runners were Haley Carr, Bailey Caudill, Taylor Fry, and Marly Jenkins. The 100M hurdles was won by Danni Kemplin (18.01) and taking third was Megan Potter (19.06). Fry finished with an eighth place finish in the 1600M run (6:14), Potter finished third in the 300M hurdles in 55.17, and Caudill came in eighth in the 800M run with a time of 2:54.

  • HCHS to host track invitational...

    It will be a tough task, but the Harrison County Fillies and Thorobreds track teams will both be seeking to repeat as team champions today as they are hosting the 39th annual Harrison County Invitational Track Meet.

    Both teams have been hit hard by graduation losses the last couple of years and both are showing some growing pains in trying to reload.

    Twelve varsity teams are expected to arrive at Ingles Stadium this afternoon in time for the 5:30 start of field events. Running events are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

  • Fillies top LexCath in softball

    Some clutch hitting and pitching by senior Megan Bullock and a fine defensive play by sophomore shortstop Rachel Hatfield secured a big win over visiting Lexington Catholic in fast pitch softball on Tuesday night at Shirley Field.

    Bullock ripped a two-run single to right field in the first inning to stake the Fillies to a 2-0 lead, then pitched out of a couple of big jams later in the game as Harrison County ran its record to 11-7 on the year with a 6-5 win.

  • Kendall returns as sports writer

    Former Cynthiana Democrat sports writer Lee Kendall will be returning to the Sports pages.

    Kendall, who resigned last year after accepting the athletic directors position at the high school, said he has notified all of the coaches of his decision to return to writing.

    Ive always liked high school sports and attend as many events as possible, said Kendall.

    The former Thorobred basketball coach said he will be writing from a positive angle about the Thorobreds and Fillies.

    He noted that being athletic director and a sports writer creates a delicate situation.

  • Doubles team seeking top seed

    The Harrison County High School boys doubles team of Seth Barnes and Hank Whalen won a couple of big matches over the past couple of weeks and are looking to improve their chances in the coming Regional Tennis Tournament in two weeks.

    Barnes and Whalen were defeated earlier in the year by the Bourbon County duo of Jett Glass and Jordan Evans for their only defeat of the regular season. But last Thursday, the two Harrison County seniors redeemed themselves with a victory of their own over their Bourbon County foeskind of.

  • Dailey hurls second no-hitter

    Freshman Logan Dailey made Harrison County baseball history on Friday night when he hurled his second consecutive no-hitter. Daileys feat came in the second round of the McDonalds/Harrison County Classic, a 10-0, six inning win over East Carter (16-5). He struck out nine batters and allowed only three base-runners, two via walks and one by a Harrison County fielding miscue.

  • Breds push streak to 9

    In last weekends Frank Shoop Invitational on the Hilltop, the Harrison County Thorobreds (15-3) posted big wins over Estill County and North Laurel before falling in a lop-sided 17-3 contest to the ninth-ranked in the state Lexington Christian Academy Eagles (13-3) in the championship.
