  • Strong field to test CCC Men...

    A full field of 96 golfers, or close to it, is expected to participate this weekend in the 45th Cynthiana Country Club's Men's Invitational Golf Tournament. The two-day, 36-hole stroke play event is set to get underway on Saturday morning and will conclude on Sunday.

    "Right now we have 70 paid entrants and expect to get right at 96 golfers for this weekends tournament," said Men's Golf Association president and tournament committee member Ray Sparks on Tuesday night. "The course is in really good shape and we look for a very competitive tournament."

  • Harrison County's grid...

    There's a new sheriff in town.

    After 25 years with Ray Graham directing the fortunes of Harrison County football, a new era was begun earlier this week with Aaron Stepp taking the reins of the Thorobreds.

    Graham announced his retirement from public education, and with it turned in his whistle as Harrison County football coach, about a month ago. He will continue teaching and coaching, now in the private sector at Lexington Christian Academy.

    In his first summer workouts with his new team on Monday, Stepp had 35 or so players show up.

    Mike Reitz Basketball Camp

    Harrison County High School basketball coach Mike Reitz has set the dates for his summer Youth Basketball Camp. The Hot Fun in the Summertime basketball camp will be held July 14 thru July 17 at the Harrison County Middle School. Grades K-6 will be held 8:30-11 a.m. daily with kids in grades 7-11 in the afternoons from 1 til 4.

  • Breds sweep Colts in semi-state...

    Sophomore Jared Martin was named the tournament MVP after Harrison County swept two straight games from West Jessamine last weekend and captured the Semi-State 6 title, earning itself a trip to the Elite Eight baseball finals at Applebee's Park in Lexington.

    Martin drove in all three Harrison County runs in the tournament opening 3-2 win over West Jessamine on Thursday. He followed up with a complete game effort on the mound in the clinching second game 6-2 win on Saturday night.

  • Fillies fall in softball regional

    For the second straight year, the Harrison County Fillies reached the semi-final round of the regional softball tournament, and for the second straight year they saw their season come to an end at that point.

    Harrison County starting pitcher Megan Bullock was the hitting and pitching star for the Fillies. The senior hurler pounded her third home run of the season in the first inning, a two-run shot, and tossed her first career no-hitter on the mound.

  • Tennis players feted

    Last Saturday, members of the 2008 Harrison County High School tennis teams were honored at a banquet at the high school.

    Seth Barnes and Hank Whalen were honored for their achievements this season as a doubles team. The duo were runners-up in regional competition, advancing to the state tournament last week in Lexington.

    Their stay in the state tournament was brief as they were handled easily by a seeded team from Madison Central, 6-0, 6-0.

    However, Harrison County coach Jennifer Hatfield says that loss shouldnt diminish their season.

  • Fillies power past Nicholas in...

    The Harrison County Fillies put on quite a power display last Tuesday as they bashed Nicholas County in the 38th District Softball Tournament Championship Game, 13-4. The host Fillies hammered four home runs and banged out 21 hits as they won their second straight district title.

  • Rain delays Tuesday's...

    The 10th Region Baseball Tournament dodged one bullet from Mother Nature on Monday, but couldn't evade a second salvo on Tuesday.

    With the score tied at 1-1 between host Harrison County and 40th District runner-up Clark County heading into the bottom of the third inning, the skies opened up and washed out the rest of the lower bracket first-round games.

    Clark County took advantage of three first inning errors by the Breds to take a 1-0 lead. Beau Sanders knotted the score in the second inning with a solo home run.

  • Breds take another district title

    In life, there are several sure thingsdeath, taxes and the Harrison County Thorobreds winning district baseball championships. Last Thursday, the 2008 edition of the Thorobreds cashed yet another ticket as they routed Nicholas County in five innings, 11-1.

    Harrison County has been in the 38th District for three years now, and it is the third straight year they have won that title. In the old 37th District, the Breds dominated as well, winning all but five district titles in the last 30 years.
