  • Breds and Fillies drop road games

    The Harrison County Fillies and Thorobreds both lost tough games last week and are looking for the weather to clear so they can get back in the gym and correct some mistakes.

    On Saturday, the Breds were once again plagued by poor post defense as they dropped a 68-64 decision to Madison Southern in the West Jessamine Colt Classic in Nicholasville.

    Eagles center Joey Wallace worked on the Breds around the basket and scored 25 of his game-high 31 points in the second half.

  • Wrestlers take 3rd at North...

    The Harrison County Thorobreds wrestling team got a late invite to compete in the North Hardin Trojan Invitational last Saturday and jumped at the opportunity.

    “We had an open date and the tournament looked to be very competitive,” said HCHS Coach Russ Riegel. “They let us in at the last minute and we jumped at it.”

    With only eight wrestlers competing, Harrison County fared well in the preliminary rounds, but faltered a bit in the medal round.

  • Reds winter caravan stops in...

    Cincinnati Reds fans gathered at Angilo’s restaurant Thursday morning to welcome Reds players and administrators. As part of a winter caravan, the Reds stopped throughout West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee. Above, Reds second-baseman Brandon Phillips signed baseballs, t-shirts, and schedules for Cynthiana fans. Along with Phillips were Hall of Fame broadcaster Marty Brennaman, broadcaster Chris Welsh, 2007 #1 draft pick Devin Mesoraco, Reds Hall of Famer Lee May, VP and Assistant GM Bob Miller, Senior Special Assistant to the General Manager Gene Bennett and Reds mascot Gapper.

  • Breds take 3rd in Capital City...

    The Harrison County Thorobreds wresting team placed third out of 17 teams competing in the Capital City Classic last Saturday at Franklin County High School.

    Oldham County won the team title and Henry Clay was second.

    Harrison County sophomore Brandon Barnett was the lone Thorobred champion on the day, winning the 171 pound class with a perfect 4-0 record, winning each match by a fall.

    Barnett won his preliminary and semi-final matches with first period pins and his quarterfinal and final round match with second period pins.

  • Top-ranked Holmes downs Breds,...

    On Saturday night in Covington, the Harrison County Thorobreds found out what it’s like to take on the best team in the state.

    Top-ranked Holmes (16-1) had little trouble taking care of the Thorobreds, jumping to an early lead and cruising to a 63-42 win.

    “In all reality, Holmes took it easy on us,” said HCHS Head Coach Mike Reitz. “This one could have been a  90-30 game or something like that.”

  • New team joins Breds football...

    The Harrison County Thorobreds football district just got significantly more difficult after the KHSAA granted a request by Covington Holmes to drop in class from 5A to 4A for the 2009 high school season.

    Two weeks ago, Holmes requested a drop in football class through the KHSAA Board of Control citing a “significant drop in enrollment over the last three years.”

  • Fillies defeat district rival...

    The Harrison County Fillies earned a much-needed win on Tuesday night at home as they defeated district rival Deming, 47-36.

    Harrison County led 14-12 after the first quarter, but went on a 11-3 run in the second period to take a 25-15 halftime lead.

    In the second half, Harrison County was never headed, though the visitors from Mt. Olivet did pull to within six points midway through the fourth quarter. From that point forward, however, Harrison County distanced itself from the Lady Black Devils.

  • Grapplers finish 2nd in HCIWT

    The host Harrison County Thorobreds went 4-1 on the day and finished second overall in the annual Harrison County Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Dec. 27 at Harrison County Middle School gymnasium.

    The Breds registered wins in the dual meet format against Ashland Blazer, Danville, Dixie Heights and Montgomery County, and lost to eventual champion Seneca.

    Seneca went undefeated in its five matches. Seneca and Harrison County both had five wrestlers who won their respective weight classes.

  • Breds drop dual to Bourbon,...

    In something of an upset, Harrison County was nipped by visiting Bourbon County last Wednesday at Southside Elementary, 34-33.

    Harrison County coach Russ Riegel shouldered much of the blame for the Breds close loss to the Colonels.

    “No question, I played it too close to the vest and probably didn’t evaluate Bourbon County’s talent very well,” explained Riegel. “I would say that evaluating their talent and guessing wrong probably caused the loss to Bourbon County.”

  • HCHS Cheerleaders win 10th...

    Congratulations to the  Harrison County High School cheerleaders for an outstanding performance on Saturday Jan. 10, at Mason County High School. Harrison County won the Super Large Cheerleading Division at the KAPOS 10th Region Cheer Competition. 

    According to the Kapos web-site, “They (Harrison County) had outstanding execution and spirit throughout their two and one half minute routine.”

    Harrison County will now advance to the KAPOS State At-Large Championships to be held in Bowling Green on Feb. 14.
