  • Shoop tourney starts tonight on...

    Another top-notch set of teams will descend on the Hilltop this weekend for the annual Frank Shoop Classic Baseball Tournament at Harrison County.

    The two-pool, six-team field features two teams that made it to the Forcht Bank/KHSAA State Tournament last year, another team that made it to the semi-state level of play in 2008, and a combined 2008 record of 156-53.

    Five of the six teams in this year’s tournament were ranked in the state-wide Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association’s pre-season coaches poll heading into this season.

  • Swinford’s Hall of...

    Congratulations to Jim Swinford for his much-deserved induction into the 10th Region Boys Basketball Hall of Fame a couple of weeks ago.  Jim was inducted as a “contributor” for his years of devotion to Harrison County Thorobreds basketball in particular and to high school sports in general.

    There is no question among the Harrison County faithful that Jim is a great ambassador for Harrison County High School athletics in general.

    HCHS wrestling banquet scheduled for April 19

    The Harrison County High School Thorobreds wrestling team will have its annual post-season awards banquet on Sunday, April 19, at 4 p.m. at the Harrison County Extension Office on New Lair Road.   • Hatfield, Hicks lead Fillies to...

    The Harrison County Fillies earned a pair of come-from-behind victories at Shirley Field on Monday and Tuesday and improved their record to 3-2.

    On Monday, Charley Hatfield ripped a walk-off double off the center field fence to give the Fillies a 3-2 win over visiting Bourbon County.

    The Lady Colonels took an early 2-0 lead over the Fillies with single runs in the second and fourth, before Harrison County mounted its comeback.

  • Breds, Fillies win first home...

    Last Tuesday, the Harrison County Thorobreds and Fillies won their first home track meets of the spring, defeating Nicholas County and Bracken County easily.

    The Breds garnered 13 first place finishes in the 16-event meet and won easily over second-place Nicholas County, 172-86. The Harrison County “B” team finished third with 43 points and Bracken County was a distant third with 19.

  • Breds drop first 2 games in...

    The Harrison County Thorobreds dropped their first two games in Pensacola, Fla., on Monday and Tuesday with two more games to be played, yesterday and today.

    On Monday, Harrison County managed only two scratch singles and were shutout by Navarre High School 5-0. On Tuesday, the Breds fell behind 4-0, tied it at 4-4 in the top of the fourth, but were beaten 6-4 in a rain-shortened five-inning game.

  • Breds open season with a pair of...

    Questions abound about the 2009 edition of the Harrison County Thorobreds baseball team. Will they be able to score runs? Will they be able to find an ace starting pitcher to replace Brandon Martin? Will their defense hold up?

    After the first two games of the regular season on Monday and Tuesday of this week, the answers are yes, yes and yes.

    Harrison County, ranked eighth in the state in the coaches’ pre-season poll, routed host Owen County on Monday, 18-0, then came back on Tuesday with a less-than-inspired 5-1 home opening win over Deming.

  • HCHS Tennis teams split first 2...

    The Harrison County High School boys and girls tennis teams got their respective seasons under way on Monday at Bourbon County and played their home opener on Tuesday against Pendleton County.

    On Monday, the Fillies defeated the Lady Colonels 6-3, while the Breds lost 7-3.

    Miranda Turk, Polly Whalen, Julie Henson, Katie O’Neal and Sara Barnett all won in singles play on Monday. The doubles team of Jacqueline Young and Whalen also won their doubles match.

  • Fillies win home opener, lose to...

    The Harrison County Fillies got their softball season off on a winning note on Monday as they defeated visiting Campbell County in five innings, 10-0.

    It took Harrison County an inning or two to get their bats rolling, but when they did, it didn’t take long for them to make quick work of the Camels.

    Lorraine Dennie keyed a big second inning for Harrison County with a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double to stake Harrison County to an early lead.

  • Cal Ripken tryouts are Saturday

    Little League try outs for first-year players, 9-12; will be this Saturday, March 28, weather permitting at the River Road Ball Park from 10 a.m. until noon. Alternate site will be at City Hall in the event of rain that will not allow outside try-outs.

    This is for Cal Ripken Little League only and does not include T-ball or coach pitch leagues. Players in the T-ball age group need not try out as they will remain on their team from last year.

    Coach pitch and girls softball tryouts will be announced at a later date.
