The winningest season in the history of Harrison County High School fast-pitch softball came to an end last week as the Fillies dropped a 6-2 decision to host Montgomery County in the semi-final round of the 10th Region Tournament.

Harrison County, the home team on the scoreboard, surrendered two runs in the top of the first inning, and could never get their offense untracked against two Lady Indian pitchers.

On Tuesday night at St. Henry High School’s Paul Kramer Field, the Harrison County Thorobreds caught something contagious. No, it wasn’t the swine flu. It was hits, hits and more hits.

The Harrison County offense erupted for nine runs on nine hits and sent 14 hitters to the plate in the first inning against Beechwood ace A.J. Smith, driving the Murray State signee from the game after only 40 pitches and after only two outs. Harrison County eventually pasted the Tigers in a five-inning affair, 14-2.

The Harrison County Fillies softball team took care of business on Monday afternoon, weathered a rain delay, and defeated St. Patrick in the first round of the eight-team 10th Region Tournament at Montgomery County High School.

Harrison County got another good pitching performance, this time from Ashley Coppage, who tossed a one-hit shutout with the Fillies winning 8-0.

Coppage allowed only a second inning single to Bracken County’s Morgan Wells. She retired the Polar Bears in order in five of the seven innings.

The Harrison County Thorobreds overcame the weather and knocked off Bracken County in a rain-delayed first-round game in the 10th Region Baseball Tournament at Scott High School on Tuesday night, 8-0.

The Breds first-round game against the Polar Bears was to have been played on Monday afternoon, but was washed out, along with both lower-bracket games.

All four first-round games were scheduled for Monday, but only one was completed before the rains came and forced cancellation of the other three contests.
