  • I hope Recreation change not...

    I read in the Democrat last week the names of the new staff hired by the new board to run the Cynthiana/Harrison County Recreation Department.  
    You know me, I would never want to become political nor jump to a conclusion so I will wait and see how it goes and I wish the new people the best success because if they are successful the better for the citizens young and old.  
    But let me say a couple of things about recreation and how we have progressed to this point.

  • Doram selected to the All 10th...

    Harrison County junior center Jordan Doram has been named to the first team All 10th Region squad as voted on by the 10th Region’s basketball coaches.  
    The 6-foot junior, who averaged a double double in scoring and rebounding for the season, joins Macie Spence and Erica Rogers of 40th District Champion Montgomery County, Sandra Skinner of 40th District runner up George Rogers Clark and Sarah Futscher of 37th District runner up Bishop Brossart.

  • Fillies youthful but potent as...

    The Harrison County Fillies enter the 2013 softball season with some key holes to fill from graduation of their pitcher, first baseman and center fielder from last year’s 38th District Champion.  
    Tracey Hicks, who pitched since she was an eighth grader, Lucinda Boyers the first sacker and Emalee Little, the center fielder, have all graduated and must be replaced for this season.
    Coach Christine Garnett and her staff have a young yet experienced group who they hope and believe will be able to fill the void.

  • Breds rout Bluejackets for 38th...

    “We played hard, scrapped and got the loose balls,” beamed Coach Larry Kendall. “Our defense was the key to the game and we held them to 42 points.”  
    This was the first-year coach’s assessment of his Harrison County Thorobreds’ 72-42 district championship game defeat of the Nicholas County Bluejackets Friday night.  
    Both teams advance to the 10th Region Tournament, which opened Monday night in Maysville.

  • Defense in second half propels...

    During the opening two quarters of the Monday night 38th District battle between Pendleton County and Harrison County, it looked like another typical rock’em sock’em game with the last one standing the winner.  
    But Harrison County came out in the second half playing an in-your-face defense that shut down the Wildcats and sent the Thorobreds to the championship game Friday with a 59-40 win under their belts.
    The game was played with a lot of energy and contact as one would think a game with 14 seniors involved would be.

  • Fillies lose heartbreaker in...

    The first game of the 38th District Championship was a nail biter from the start with time running out on the Harrison County Fillies in the end for a 49 to 48 loss to the Pendleton County Lady Cats.
    Pendleton County jumped out to an early lead with sophomore McKayla Manor scoring eight of her 11 points in the first period.  
    Manor scored half of the Pendleton County points in the quarter as her team jumped out to a 16-12 lead at the quarter’s end.

  • There is some time that I will...

    I was coerced Sunday to waste more time than I have wasted in I don’t know when.  
    It depends on one’s definition of “wasted time” but in my mind, I lost several hours.  
    NASCAR has not started yet so those of you who think that it is a waste of time to watch a bunch of cars drive in a circle, that wasn’t my time waster.  
    I like NASCAR and don’t consider that a waste of time especially if I am in attendance at the track.

    HCHS cheerleaders finish 12th in national competition, head to state finals Saturday
    The Harrison County High School Varsity Cheerleaders returned last week from a great performance in the national finals in Orlando, Fla. The girls, competing in the small squad division, placed 12th of the 42 teams in the division.  
    The girls advanced to the finals by completing one of the best rounds of the day in the semi’s advancing them on to Sunday night’s competition.

  • Homecoming/Senior Night blowout...

    The delayed and rescheduled homecoming game and the end-of-the-season Senior Night festivities were very good Friday night except for one glaring omission. The Harrison County Thorobreds lost the game in a less than impressive outing leaving an emotional hole in the festivities.
    The night started very nicely with a chili supper/bake sale sponsored by Project Graduation, which was nearly a $1,000 success.  
    The junior varsity game was very well played going into overtime before the Montgomery County team edged the Thorobreds junior varsity 58 to 54.
