The 2009 Cynthiana Art Walk brought hundreds of people to downtown Cynthiana to participate, to stroll, to laugh and to enjoy artistic talents on display. The evening came alive as business after business threw open their doors for artists’ displays and visitors’ viewing. There were music venues, a creative fashion show, wine tasting, things to eat, places to sit and fun for all ages.

Members of the school board, Mr. Dotson, Ms. Fischer, Mr. Schmidt, Ms. Casey, Mr. Switzer, parents, guests and the Class of 2010: 

Seniors, I am honored to share some thoughts with you tonight. I know you are anxiously waiting to get that diploma.

Congratulations class of 2010.

You have reached another rung on the ladder of your educational journey. You may recall your first day of school---getting on the school bus, mom with her camera taking your picture, giving you hugs and shedding a few tears. Probably you shed some tears also. 

When my youngest daughter was in middle school she told me she got gypped out of a testimony.

She went on to explain that whenever she went to church camp or a retreat, a guest speaker would give his or her faith testimony.

The details would differ from speaker to speaker, but not the format: “I used to do really, really bad things” or “my life was really, really bad because other people did really, really bad things to me and then I met Jesus and now my life is really, really good.”

With weather forecasts calling for highs in the mid-80s this week, no one can argue that summer is right around the corner, begging us to come outside and bask in all its glory.

It’s this time of the year when Cynthiana and Harrison County residents step outside their doorsteps, feel the warm glow, then scratch their head and say, “Well, what are we going to do outside?”

 My son, Ian Boland, 7, and myself, would like to thank the Community Health Partnership Wellness Subcommittee for hosting the Longest Day of Play at FRVP on June 21. Our community was one of several in all of Kentucky that marked the summer solstice with a new perspective of fun outdoor games that encourage children to get active. There were 20 booths that were managed by various community organizations, and as always, our community comes together for a good cause.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate coach Mac Whitaker, his coaching staff and all the members of the baseball team on a very successful season and winning their fourth state baseball title.

 You will never know how proud I was listening to the state title game via the internet and my high school winning.

There’s several occupations I know I should never try.

I could never be a farmer... although I was recently successful in my attempt to herd a calf into its field after it strayed into the Darnell backyard last week.

I could never be a teacher. I wasn’t granted the gift of patience.

I could never be a semi-truck driver. My mom’s van is the largest thing I should be allowed to drive.

And I could never be an emergency medical service worker.

To the editor:

I am writing on behalf of the Belmont Senior Apartment residents on West Pleasant Street. While management has provided one picnic table and three benches, none are situated in a restful, shady position. Since there are about three large, shade trees in grassy area, we would appreciate a chair or bench in which to contemplate/meditate, maybe with a pet or reading matter.

To the editor:

I was reading the court news a week or so ago and noticed there were far too many incidents of police being called to help find, hunt down or otherwise make a report on a missing cell phone or Ipod.

If people insist on having these easily misplaced items glued to their ears, then they should be responsible for locking them up for safe keeping after using them.

All these nuisance calls tie up the police and cost taxpayers money when these precious commodities could be used for more important things.
