  • Readers sound off on election...

    To the editor:

    I am writing this to urge all Cynthiana residents to vote for Mark Mattmiller for City Commissioner on Nov. 4. I have known Mr. Mattmiller my entire adult life and have worked closely with him at the high school.

    Mark Mattmiller is a very hard worker. He is presented with unusual problems almost daily and throws himself into them until they are solved. Mattmiller has a gift for getting people to work together to find solutions. He has a dedication to doing things the right way.

  • Mention of Welcome Wagon brought...

    To the editor:

    This letter is in response to Mrs. Jean-Ann Kerr’s letter, which appeared in last week’s Democrat.

    I am one of Mrs. Emma Lou Wade, the Welcome Wagon lady’s, grandchildren. My Mamaw was a very special lady. In fact, she and my Papaw were wonderful people.

    It touched my heart to see that people, outside of our family, still remember her. I know how much she enjoyed doing the Welcome Wagon. She loved meeting new people, and she tried her best to make them feel welcomed.

    To the editor:

    I am a concerned citizen of Cynthiana and I am writing because it is a shame that working people can’t get help but people who are not working can get help.

    I’m speaking particularly of people on welfare and other government stuff. If this town can’t help working people then working people shouldn’t have to pay taxes for people who don’t work.

  • Support urged for blood drive

    To the editor:

    I am writing about the upcoming Blood Drive that is one of the three blood drives sponsored each year by the Homemakers of Harrison County. The Homemakers have been hosting successful Blood Drives for 25 years. The Connersville Club and the Curry Club will provide homemade cookies for the blood drive.

    The Blood Drive is on Friday, Oct. 24, at the Harrison County Extension Office at 668 New Lair Road in the multi-purpose room from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. Photo identification is required.

  • Handy House should be treated like...

    To the editor:

    I recently had the opportunity to tour the Handy House. I was astonished by its craftsmanship and wonderful condition. As a remodeler, I worked extensively in the Old Louisville area during its revitalization period of the 1970s and ‘80s and I never started work in a building that was in as good condition as is the Handy House.

    I know there are those who would like to see this house gone but after having seen the beautiful condition of this old home, I don’t understand why anyone would want to take it down.

  • Child appreciates firefighter'...

    To the editor:

    I want to thank the firefighter that checked my car seat and showed my parents the correct way to keep me safe. I forgot to ask his name, but he explained to us what kind of car seat was best for my height and weight. He took his time and made sure that we understood. All of us appreciated it so much. After we all talked we went to Wal-Mart and bought me the correct kind of booster seat. It is so cool and I feel like a big boy in it. I'm only three years old but I can pretend I'm a firefighter in my new seat.

    Generosity of residents is a beacon of light for Harrison County

    To the editor:

    I would like to take this opportunity to thank two of Harrison County?s finest residents, who probably are not even noticed at all.

    Helen Green and Candy Beagle are two young women who work at a local business in Cynthiana. These women do many significant deeds in the community.

    Lack of police in town needs explanation

    To the editor:

    I would like to know how a city as big as Cynthiana does not have enough police officers to do a police escort for a funeral.

  • "Everybody's Granny:...

    Her name is Ida Elizabeth Hyatt, but everybody calls her Granny, Granny Hyatt.

    On December 24, she will have a century of memories to cherish. This woman has blessed so many lives around her and in turn been blessed by them.

    I am especially lucky because she really is my granny, my great-granny.

    I want to tell you about her. Let me warn you though. My family has decided that I tell stories like she did. I have a habit of going from one story into the next before I finish the first one.

  • LVC student shares cancer story...

    When I contacted the personnel cabinet in August to find out what qualifications were necessary to apply for another position within the agency for which I work, I found out that in order for me to be considered for the position, I needed three more college credits.

    Therefore, I made a decision to enroll at Maysville Community and Technical College to attain the required hours.
