    Isn’t it nice to see the new spirit that our little town is assuming? Everything seems brighter in town these days, from cleaner streets and kept yards to continuous progress at the park. We have gained a nice new bounce in our step and it seems that we are feeling a little good about ourselves right now. And we should!

    We have known Bill and his family for several years now and we believe Bill is the best candidate for district judge.

    As Nov. 2, 2010 comes closer and we step up to the voting booth, what are you going to do? Vote the same name again? Or are you going to take the bull by the horns and vote for someone new, someone with a new look at our problems and do something about them?

    It’s time for the old guard to retire and give up that chair that they think has their name on it for the rest of their lives -  same old rules, same old policies, saying ‘this was how it had always been done, why change now?’ Does that sound familiar to you?

    Although I’m embarrassed to admit this, I’m a sucker for whatever’s cool or hip.

    When I was 12, I convinced my mom that I needed a pair of white go-go boots because the “Hulabaloo” dancers wore them on TV. (If you have to ask “What’s ‘Hulabalo?’” I don’t want to hear it.)

    Mom got them for me at the Stride Rite shoe store, but I never wore them. Hip and cool chicks could get away with wearing white go-go boots, but I never could, not at 12 or 22 or 32.

  • Help elect Lutz for magistrate

    To the editor:

    People say that as each election comes around, that this is the most important election ever. Well, we don’t know if that is true or not, but what we do know is that Harrison County has not developed like the surrounding counties have. Harrison County has had the same group of people in office and we need a change to lead us to a bright future. One leader of that generation is Missy Lutz, who is running for magistrate in District 4 - that is the Leesburg and Extension Office precincts. Please help us get her elected.

  • A GOOD IDEA

    For years, Harrison County residents have vocalized the desire for an indoor facility that would cater to Cynthiana’s recreational needs.

    It appears the possibility of that facility is closer now than ever before.

    Wedco health department employees are currently working on a matching $250,000 grant from the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky that would build a wellness/activity center at Flat Run Veterans Park.

  • Covering the FACTS

    When I think about gossip, I think about high school.

    It was always amazing to me how you could say something in the parking lot of HCHS, and whatever you said could somehow beat you into the school.

    Words travel faster than humans.

    But gossip isn’t only found in high school hallways, bathrooms, cafeterias and classrooms.

    People often ask me how I come to know about the stories I write.

    “Somebody tells me,” I always reply back.

    I ran for the constable seat for my district this last primary season and I got to meet many people and I have to say that Harrison Countians are some of the best folk around. When I moved to this area, my family and I were welcomed with open arms. This county has a rich history and I would like to see that and it’s future continue to shine in Kentucky.

  • Moses will work hard for town

    To the editor:

    I want to urge the citizens of Cynthiana to vote Steve Moses as your next mayor. I have been friends with Mr. Moses and his family since childhood and cannot think of a more dedicated and honest citizen to lead our town. I feel a strong leader is someone who is not afraid to roll their sleeves up and put in an honest day of hard work. Mr. Moses is no stranger to hard work. He worked for 27 years at the State Highway Department. He has the experience to manage our city streets.

  • Stuck on the throne of fear

    The night I was struck with fear began as any other ordinary night.

    I put on pajamas, brushed my teeth, washed my face and went to bed.

    I am 24 years old, but I think I have an 88-year-old bladder.

    I woke up around midnight, like so many other nights, and had to pee.

    I got up and blindly made my way to the dark bathroom.

    I situated myself on the porcelain prince and prepared to do what I had been called there to do... when I saw something out of the corner of my eye.

  • His glory is all in the family

    Recently, my brother’s father-in-law, Ed Bremser, died after a very long illness.

    Just a few months before that, his mother-in-law, Audrey, died.

    The Bremser family is a bunch of huggy, kissy, demonstrative, fiercely loyal, loud, emotionally close people.

    They’ve had a lot of tragedy and hardship in their ranks, but they stick together. Over the years, the Bremsers have been my brother’s primary family.

  • ‘Dinner with David Sheely...

    Something magical happened in Cynthiana last Friday night. If we had stopped to think about it, we most definitely would not have predicted magic, but prediction or not there it was.

    We live in Cynthiana, a quiet little town, so most of the time when we want a fun night out, we get in the car and drive somewhere else. But last Friday and Saturday driving anywhere else was totally unnecessary.

    In last week’s Cynthiana Democrat I read a letter written on behalf of Mark Mattmiller. The letter mentions an online poll that a local radio station announced Mattmiller as the winner. I can’t see how this shows a true sampling of the residence of Cynthiana since so very few even knew about it.

    As the November election draws nearer, I find it overwhelming when considering my personal voting decisions. Among the list of capable individuals running for city commissioner, there is one candidate in which I can gladly cast my vote with complete confidence. Roger Slade gets my vote.

    I was wondering if there was going to be a debate this election. And if not, why? There has been a debate in our past election years. I feel it would benefit all voters to have a debate so we can hear first hand what the issues are that each person is concerned with and how they plan on doing for our town.
