  • Tending the summer tomatoes

    I have some healthy looking tomato plants in the garden this year which is refreshing after last year’s diseased lot. Nothing ripe yet but all in all things look promising despite the pop-up down pours and the 90 degree weather.

    “I don’t like spiders and snakes…” are the lyrics to the catchy 1970s tune by singer Jim Stafford. Although the song has little to do with wildlife, the sentiment holds true for many whose fear, when they cross paths with a common snake or spider, is real even when the perceived danger isn’t.

    The Anness family reunion will be held Sunday, June 6. A potluck lunch will be served at noon at Northside Elementary School. All family and friends are invited to attend.

    CUMMINS

    Joseph and Lydia Fleming Cummins were married in Bourbon County, Ky. in 1793 and lived at Antioch Mills in what is now Harrison County, Ky. They had 13 children and 140 grandchildren.  Eight of the children went to Illinois in early 1800s and the other five stayed in Kentucky. Anyone with Cummins family connections is invited to attend.

    * Log Cabin, March 24, 1906 - “Interurban Road - An engineering corps composed of the senior class in civil engineering of the State College, Lexington, has begun a survey for an interurban line from Lexington to Cynthiana by way of Russell Cave turnpike. The work being done under the supervision of Mr. W. A. Newman and under direct charge of Mr. Nesbit. The parties who are having the work done are reported to be Eastern capitalists, but Mr. Newman declined to give their names. The proposed line will run through Centerville, Jacksonville, and Broadwell to Cynthiana.

  • FSA emergency loans available to 90...

    Farmers in 90 counties are eligible for Federal disaster assistance, including low interest emergency (EM) loans from USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) provided eligibility requirements are met.

    On May 11, 2010, President Obama declared eleven Kentucky counties as disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by severe storms, flooding, mudslides and tornadoes that occurred from May 1 and continuing.

  • Harrison County Extension Office...

    As the summer begins, the Harrison County extension office welcomes this year’s summer ag intern, Michelle Simon, 21.

    An animal science major, Simon recently graduated from the University of Kentucky, where she was involved in the Brock and Bridle Club, the Agro Business Club, collegiate 4-H and UK’s dairy club.

    She served as an ambassador for the ag college and worked on the university’s dairy farm.

    “I’m excited to be interning in a totally different county,” Simon said.

    Descendants of David Evans and Amanda McCauley reunion will be held June 19 at noon at the Harrison County 4-H grounds.

    MORRISON

    The Morrison reunion will be held July 10 from 11 a.m. to ? at the Scott County Park in the outdoor shelter. Bring a dish, drinks, etc., and enjoy a day of memories.

  • Fire blight in ornamental pears

    This past winter we cut down a handful of old apple trees in the orchard because they were so diseased from fire blight.

    Two large ‘White House’ ornamental pears and a few crabapples are slated for removal, as well.

    I have noticed additional cases around town, which brings us to the question, what is causing so much die-back in ornamental and orchard tress?

    Every couple of years we see an increased incidence of a disease called fire blight on ornamental and fruit trees including apple, crabapple, serviceberry, pear, plum and cherry.

    * Cynthiana Democrat, May 25,1911 - “In an effort to save her son, Mary Welch and Robert Welch were killed by the cars. Mary J. Welch and her son Robert were struck by a train on the Keller Bridge north of Cynthiana Saturday (May 20) and were thrown into the South Licking. They were instantly killed. Seventy-eight years of age, she was formerly Miss Kearns. Her husband, who was a Federal soldier, had been dead for a number of years. A daughter died about a year ago in Lexington.

  • Rollercoaster of wet, cool, dry and...

    According to our weather forecasters, it looks like we are getting ready for another swing in our weather. 

    The cool, wet weather pattern was great for my peas, greens and potatoes, but I am starting to think maybe I should have waited one more week before putting the tomatoes and peppers out. 

    Our rollercoaster ride from hot and dry to cool and wet and back again is good news for some and bad for others.

    So how do precipitation and temperature affect plants? Well, in every way possible.

  • Producers reminded of approaching...

    Farmers and landowners are reminded that they have until Tuesday, June 1, 2010, to sign up for the 2010 Direct and Counter-cyclical Program and the Average Crop Revenue Election Program. More than 75 percent of an expected 1.7 million farms have already enrolled.

    Producers must be aware of these deadlines and take action. Farmers and landowners must enroll their eligible farms no later than June 1, 2010, to take advantage of these important programs. USDA calculates DCP payments using base acres and payment yields established for each farm.

  • CSP signup deadline is June 11

    Harrison County landowners still have time to sign up for the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) at their local Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) office but the deadline for getting signed up for the second CSP ranking period is quickly approaching. According to NRCS District Conservationist Richard Bowling, now is the time for landowners and producers who have considered applying for CSP to get signed up and submit documentation. USDA has announced the national cutoff date for CSP is June 11, which requires landowners submit applications quickly.

  • Farmers affected by flooding can...

    Kentucky farmers may be able to utilize federal relief programs to get help for farm-related losses incurred since April 30 as a result of severe storms, flooding, mudslides, straight line winds and tornadoes.

    Producers who suffered at least a 30 percent loss in crop production or livestock products may apply for aid from the Emergency Loan Program (ELP). Owner-operators or tenant operators of family farms can take advantage of a low 3.75 percent interest rate to borrow up to 100 percent of actual production or physical losses up to $500,000.
