    The Harrison County High School Class of 1995 will host its 15-year reunion at the Cynthiana Country Club on Aug. 14, 2010 from 7 p.m. to midnight.

    Tickets purchased in advance are $15 for a single and $30 for a couple.

    Payments may be sent to Whitney Slade Hedges at 4049 Ky Hwy 392, Cynthiana, KY 41031 or Christy Furnish Barnes, 1493 Dutch Chapel Road, Cynthiana, KY 41031.

    Tickets purchased the night of the reunion will be $20 for a single and $35 per couple.

  • Purslane turns out to be a tasty...

    I have long understood that purslane could be used in salads or soups, but have never made much of an effort to harvest and devise a kitchen plan until know. 

    I had this fabulous stand of the weed in my kitchen garden after I pulled the old greens that bolted from the summer heat. It made perfect sense to let it grow and flourish because no lettuce seed would be germinating in this heat and I knew that this garden was free from any herbicides.

    So, the purslane established and I have turned young and old alike onto its culinary virtues.

    * Cynthiana Democrat, Nov. 30, 1950 - “Raging Blizzard - Snowdrifts in Rural Areas as High as 12 Feet - A raging blizzard Satuday night resulting in snow drifts as high as 12 feet in some rural areas, left Cynthiana and Harrison County locked in the heaviest snowfall since January, 1936. With the exception of the L & N Railroad all transportation facilities serving the city were brought to a standstill.

  • Bagworms are on the move, slowly

    I received a call the other day about what to do with a blue spruce covered in bagworms. The tree is apparently covered (and large), so hand-picking was not an option.  The caller said the pest was rather large, too, so I had to recommend a systemic insecticide as the treatment. 

    I prefer that we catch the bagworms earlier in the season so that we can take a biological approach, but this is not always the case.

    •Virginia Shadea Ridley was born to Natasha White and James Ridley of Cynthiana, on July 16, 2010 at Harrison Memorial Hospital. She weighed 7 lbs. 14 oz.

    • Georgia Elizabeth Northcutt was born to Scott and Kristen Northcutt of Cynthiana, on June 23, 2010 at St. Joseph Hospital. She weighed 8 lbs. 5 oz.

    • Jake Hunter Bowlin was born to Chris and Sara Bowlin on June 25, 2010 at Harrison Memorial Hospital. He weighed 5 lbs. 14 oz.

    * All of us at the Cynthiana-Harrison County Museum anticipate the community’s second Art Walk. Last year’s event was a marvelous opportunity for the museum to shine. Accolades to those who work so diligently to organize, promote, and implement the festivities.

    • Madison Jo Milner was born to Emily Huffman and Brandon Milner on May 29, 2010 at Central Baptist Hospital. She weighed 4 lbs.

    • Mallory Maree Houg was born to Susie Crump and Jonathan Houg at Harrison Memorial Hospital on June 14, 2010. She weighed 7 lbs. 2 oz.

    • Tre’quan Roger-Allen Commodore was born to Jessica and Roger Commodore of Cynthiana on July 19, 2010 at Harrison Memorial Hospital. He weighed 7 lbs. 9 oz.

  • Crape Myrtles, high summer bloom

    We should use more crape myrtles in Kentuckiana, they are not just for more warm, temperate climates; in fact, there are a great many that go unbothered by an average winter in our parts. 

    There is often a lull in the garden at this time, our early summer blooms are fading and our late summer garden has yet to pop; but the crape myrtle can provide a colorful bridge between the two. This summer blooming shrub is in full glory by the end of July through August, the months of high summer, as I like to call it.

  • Curing is key to successful storage

    Potatoes, garlic and onions:  these tree vegetables are staples worldwide partly because of their versatility and partly because of their storage-ability. Late July and August is when our spring planted onions, garlic and potatoes reach maturity and are ready for harvest. If you want to harvest some new potatoes, onions or garlic before they reach maturity enjoy them at the table in short order but if you want to store them it is important to harvest them at the correct time.
