    * Cynthiana Democrat, July 26, 1917 -- Big crowd at Cynthiana Court Day. The livestock market not so strong as last court day. Auctioneer W. F. Renaker reported about 200 head of cattle. They sold from eight to nine cents a pound. Cows brought from $50 to $90 dollars a head. Plug horses sold from $40 to $75, and good horses from $100 to $150.

    * Log Cabin, May 26, 1880 -- Gus Berry, charged with throwing rocks at Dover Colemans house, was fined $5 and costs for breach of peace. A $100 peace bond was also required of him in default of which he was sent to jail.

  • Reseed the lawn in late summer

    Does your lawn need some attention? I generally dont worry about the lawn too much; I just make sure that I mow properly to maintain a relatively healthy stand of fescue. Sure there are a few weeds here and there but I prefer not going to toxic extremes to be perfect.

    The University of Kentucky recognizes the academic performance of 17 students from Harrison County who were named to the UK Deans List for the spring 2008 semester.

  • Bagworms are on the move, slowly

    I received a call the other day about what to do with a blue spruce covered in bagworms. The tree is apparently covered (and large) so hand-picking was not an option. The caller said the pest was rather large, too, so I had to recommend a systemic insecticide as the treatment. I prefer that we catch the bagworms earlier in the season so that we can take a biological approach but this is not always the case.

  • Cool spring delays harvest

    All indications suggest there are more first time gardeners this year then ever; and I been fielding questions from many of them. This is good news all around but this season has been a bit unusual. Ever season is unusual, really, if there is one thing I have learned its that gardening and its associated chores do not follow the calendar.

    HERRINGTON

    A local resident received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Transylvania University on Saturday, May 24, during a commencement ceremony on the front steps of historic Old Morrison.

    Nicholas County High School graduate, Melody Dawn Herrington, earned a degree in economics and a communications minor. Herrington is the daughter of Billy and Linda Herrington of Cynthiana.

    LEITH

    Julianna Leith, of Cynthiana, has accepted Maryville Colleges Highlander Scholarship and plans to enroll at the private Liberal arts college this fall as a member of the Class of 2012.

    Planning Commission of Cynthiana, Harrison County, Berry will meet Monday, July 21, 7:30 p.m., at the sheriffs office for a training session (no items on the agenda). The meetings are open to the public.

    WIGGINS

    Courtney Wiggins, a freshman at Harrison County High School, has achieved a great triumph. Courtney took the 73rd Grand Concours or National French Exam this year.

    With over 100,000 French students in the 50 states competing in the 2008 event, Courtney scored 21st in the nation.

    This was her first year in Tonya Wagoners French class at Harrison County High School.

    Courtney is the daughter of Marty and Patty Wiggins and the granddaughter of Charles and Peggy Carson and John T. and Sherry Wiggins.

    Births announced this week are: Mason Lee Cain, June 16, son of Paul and Kim Cain; Wesley Thomas Kenney, June 12, son of Talina Kenney; Michael Matthew Leahy, June 15. son of Michael and Mary Jo Leahy.

    Dr. Henry Norfleet joins the staff of Dr. Gregory Cooper to form Family Care Associates. A year earlier, Dr. LeRoy Gallenstein and nurse practitioner Johnnie Schuller joined Coopers staff. The Family Care Associates office is located in the Professional Arts Building at Harrison Memorial Hospital.

    * Cynthiana Democrat, May 1876 -- Harrison Hotel, Main Street Opp. Courthouse, Cynthiana. Henry C. Nebel, proprietor. The attention of the public is invited to this house, which is furnished in excellent style and the table supplied with the best the market affords. A bar is kept in connection with this hotel, where pure liquors and choice cigars are kept on sale. During the oyster season fresh oysters are served up in the best style. Thankful to the public for past patronage, a continuance of the same is respectfully solicited.

    Kaylee Nicole Dargavell was born to Bradley and Brittany Dargavell on May 1, 2008, at St. Joseph East in Lexington, Ky. She weighed 7 lbs. 10 oz.

    Maternal grandparents are Scottie and Sandy Ritchie of Cynthiana; maternal great-grandparents are Catherine Ritchie of Cynthiana and the late Robert Ritchie, and the late Leo and Nellie Williams.

    Paternal grandparents are Brian Dargavell of Mt. Olivet and Wanda Welte of Cynthiana; paternal great-grandparents are Barbara Dargavell of Mt. Olivet and the late Walter Dargavell and the late Rose Horn.

    *Cynthiana Democrat, Dec. 27, 1917 - Aunt Liz Smith passed quietly away, Thursday afternoon, Dec. 20 about one oclock, while sitting in a chair before the fire at her home on Church Street in this city. Had she lived until Jan. 7, she would have been 92 years old. Elizabeth Remington Smith was a daughter of the late Greenup and Sallie Hamilton Remington, of this city, and was born Jan. 7, 1826. She was one of a family of nine children, all of whom are now dead, except one sister, Carolyn Taylor of Kansas City, Mo.
