Georgetown College professor Ed Smith is bringing his acclaimed film Surviving Guthrie to the historic Rohs Opera House Sept. 20 with the hopes his fellow Harrison Countians will share in the joy of a project that has some legs.

The showing, sponsored by the Cynthiana Arts Council, is at 7:30 p.m., followed by a reception with the cast and crew at Bianckes the popular, downtown restaurant that was featured in one of the movies scenes.

Ellie Pribble, Health Sciences teacher at Harrison Area Technology Center, received the KACTE Teacher of the Year award at the 2008 Career and Technical Education Summer Program in Louisville, Ky. on July 27.

SWITZER

Anah Switzer, a 2008 graduate of Harrison County High School, was awarded the Presidential Scholarship to attend the University of Kentucky.

The Presidential Scholarship covers the cost of her tuition and mandatory fees for up to four years of undergraduate study. The award was given to Switzer based on her completion of the Governors Scholars program.

*Cynthiana Democrat, Nov. 19, 1953 -- The first traffic since Sept. 29 started moving Monday night over the newly erected steel span across Main Licking River at Claysville after the maintenance crew of the State Department of Highways completed laying the flooring of the new span. The new bridge replaces the old covered structure destroyed by fire. Only 45 days were required to erect the new Bailey bridge sections (army surplus material), thus topping the previous bridge building record claimed by the State Highway Department of Georgia which erected a similar span in 70 work days.

During the summer my grocery bills are pretty modest. My vegetable garden keeps us well-supplied in fruits and vegetables. The goal now is to turn the summer bounty into something we can use in the winter, too. I am getting much better at putting up my homegrown produce.

FIELDS

Joel Micah Fields, formerly of Cynthiana, received the Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law Sunday, May 4 during the schools 96th commencement held at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts in Memphis, Tenn. Joel is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Joel is the son of Jean Fields of Gibsonville, N.C. and the late LTC Charles G. Fields of Cynthiana.

*Lexington Herald, May 7, 1955, by Rebecca Patton Miller, correspondent -- Historic Harrison County House sells for - thats right- $35. The red brick house on West Pike Street was sold at public auction recently for the magnificent sum of $35. Only catch is - Riley Dennis who bought it has to move it. The land beneath it had been sold previously for a new Kroger supermarket and the house was auctioned as a means of getting it out of the way. The house, overlooking the South Licking River, was built by Dr. Gavin Morrison.

Sometimes the harder I try to understand the workings of nature, the more confused I get. I think I am finally working through the confusion in the case of witches broom, a distortion of plant growth where twigs, leaves or other plant parts are densely clustered together. My advice when gardeners question the odd formation is plant pathologists dont completely understand it but once its there, its thereprune it out and hope for the best; or remove the plant all together. Not very optimistic, I know.

BLANTON, STRAWZELL

Joseph Scott Blanton and Kelsi Brown Strawzell, both of Harrison County, have attended the Governors Scholars Program.

By participating, students have the opportunity to exchange ideas and discover different points of view while interacting with other students and learning new disciplines. The program is free to those who attend.

Scholars spend five weeks on a college campus, participating in science, mathematics, humanities and the arts, co-curricular activities, community improvement projects, seminars and other activities.
