2009 New year baby. Dr. Derek Clarke delivered the first baby of the New Year on Jan. 1 at 9:46 p.m. at Harrison Memorial Hospital. Noah Patrick Thomas Ballinger was born to Brad and Kayla Ballinger of Cynthiana. He is welcomed by his sisters, Hopelynn and Alexxi, and brother, Christian. Noah and his parents received many prizes donated by local Harrison County businesses.

Plant and seed catalogs will be jamming the mailbox any day now. I always feel like January ushers in a clean slate for the garden: optimism abounds among the fresh ideas and new goals; and promises never to repeat a crop busting mistake are sharp in my memory. 

Sometimes the slate stays clean; sometimes it doesn’t. Either way the next couple of months can be used to plan and prepare for the next growing season. Don’t get over whelmed by (or over indulge in) all the catalogs until you actually decide on what you want to accomplish for the year.

Ella Marie Yazell

Ella Marie Yazell was born to Joseph Adam and Jennifer Yazell of Berry, Ky. on Dec. 17, 2008 at Harrison Memorial Hospital. She weighed 8 lbs. 5 oz.

Maternal grandparents are Keith Smiley of Cynthiana and Sheree Smiley of Georgetown, Ky.; maternal great-grandparents are Roger and Patricia Fryman of Berry, Jimmie and Marilyn Casey of Berry, and the late Clarence and Elsie Smiley of Cynthiana.

• Cynthiana Democrat, June 13, 1929 - by the Observer - “When I became somewhat familiar with Cynthiana, ‘Uncle’ Henry Johnson was the popular barber of the town and continued his trade for some years after, retiring somewhere in the 1880’s on account of advance age. Doubtless many of our elderly citizens will remember him and various locations of the shop, ranging from Jones Row on north Court Square to the Rankin Hotel, now the Hammond building on Pike Street; For a brief time he plied his calling in the basement of the new brick hotel.”

A’shaelyn Blaine Veandric Cummins

A’shaelyn Blaine Veandric Cummins was born to Stormi Cummins and Jonathan ‘Bud’ Mackey on Nov. 14, 2008 at Georgetown Community Hospital. She weighed 6 lbs. 4.5 oz.

Maternal grandparents are Vesta Cummins and the late Blaine Cummins; maternal great-grandparents are Rose Stone and Amos Penney, and the late Artie Custard and the late William Cummins.

Paternal grandmother is Erica Mackey; paternal great-grandparents are Mattie Mackey and the Rev. Earl Mackey.

• Log Cabin, Sept. 10, 1920 -- “We learn that several interested parties have been making inquiries about the Monticello property with a view to establishing a military school here next year. The property is ideal for the purpose and such a school would be a great advantage to Cynthiana in many ways. Every possible encouragement should be given to the enterprise if there is a good opportunity.”

No need to wait on putting the roses to bed this year. We have gone from the frying pan to the ice bath in short order this season. I don’t get rose protection questions like I used to; it seems most have gone the “Knock Out” road so little maintenance is required.  Knock Out roses can stand a little attention now but really there is no pressure. 

* Cynthiana News, Feb. 9, 1854 -- “Harrison Lodge No. 75, I.O.O.F., meets at its Hall, Miller’s corner, in the third story - entrance on Pike Street, every Saturday night at 6 1/2 o’clock. Transient Brothers are invited to attend. By order of the Lodge. Jacob S. Trisler, recording secretary.”

* Cynthiana Democrat, April 28, 1921 -- “Kelat News: Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Patrick and little daughter of Lexington attended church at High Curry Sunday and were guests of Marvin Patrick for dinner, returning home Sunday afternoon.”
