  • It seems we are in the middle of yet another “situation,” as my husband calls it, served up by Mother Nature.  At present, we are right in the middle of the mess out at the farm.  No electricity, no phone line, no heat and no water. 

    We can manage well enough inside with the fireplace, kerosene heater, camp stove, down comforter and strategic water rationing (with supplements brought in from town).  Outside is a different story. 

    The ice storm and snow have left a path of downed trees and limbs. 

  • The Sunrise Homemakers Club continues to be a strong and active club--formed in 1946. Margie Rainey was one of the 21 that formed the club and is a Charter Member of the Harrison County Homemakers. Present membership is 22. This year five new members were welcomed. They are Peggy Barlow, Janice Griffin, Marilyn Moss, Shawna O’Brien, and Sherry Williams.

    Jaxton Blake James was born to Calvin James of Georgetown and Trista Milner of Cynthiana, on Nov. 29, 2008 at Georgetown Community Hospital.

    He weighed 9 lbs. 3 oz., and is welcomed by his brother Jayden Scot James.

  • 4-H Club Officers have been elected for 2009. These officers have received training at the Harrison County 4-H Club Officers Training held in November at the Harrison County Extension Center. These officers will be in charge of their monthly 4-H club meetings for 2009.

    The Kentucky 4-H Centennial is a momentous occasion for the organization that has made a positive, lasting impact on the lives of hundreds of thousands of the state’s youth over the years. To kick off a year of celebration, 4-H is planning a birthday bash. It will be Feb. 21 at the Hyatt Regency, Lexington.

  • * Cynthiana Democrat, March 9, 1922 - “Connersville’s New High School Building Goes Up In Smoke - Tuesday night, March 7, the new county high school at Connersville, eight miles from Cynthiana, was completely destroyed by fire including the contents. Construction of the building was completed in 1920 at a cost of $20,000 to the county.”

    Cynthiana Police Department gets new station through HUD funding. The Cynthiana Housing Authority received a $79,500 Housing and Urban Development grant, designed to eliminate crime in and around the public housing. The new CPD substation is located on Locust Street.

    Direct TV buys out Primestar Inc. The acquisition was made by Hughes Electronic Corporation, a unit of General Motors Corporation, the parent company of Direct TV. The same company merged with United States Satellite Broadcasting (USSB).

  • One of the best things about January is all the good catalogs that come in the mail.  It is much easier to believe that spring will come again when you have a stack of catalogs that show glossy pictures of fruits, vegetables and flowers.  The extra time spent indoors by the fire also allows us to spend some time plotting and planning what we want to add to the garden in 2009.

    When it comes to the home orchard or berry patch planning is indeed a good thing.

  • On Monday, Jan. 26 the Harrison County Extension Office will begin two weeks of educational meetings about growing vegetables in Harrison County. Dr. John Strang, Vegetable and Fruit Specialist from the University of Kentucky, will visit to discuss vegetable and fruit production. There will also be discussions about things needed to do in preparation for this years’ production season.
