The city waterworks, aided by a well organized and thoroughly disciplined fire department, afford almost invincible protection against fire. The streets are brilliantly illuminated with electric lights - arc lights principally - and the majority of the residences are likewise lighted. A complete telephone system is in operation. Two telegraph companies, the Western Union and Postal, furnish every facility in their line.

  • Two weeks ago I asked “what more Mother Nature?”  Well, another gusty wind storm was served up adding to the collection of debris left by the ice storm.

  • 64th anniversary of Iwo Jima ceremonies

    planned for Feb. 22

    The 64th anniversary of Iwo Jima will be held at the VFW Post in Flemingsburg, Ky. on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m. Ceremonies honoring PFC Franklin R. Sousley, USMCR (KIA) will be held at the Elizaville Cemetery, Elizaville, Ky. at 4 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

  • * Cynthiana Democrat, July 26, 1917 - “Today is Patriotic Day for the Knights of Pythias and will be celebrated in some form by every lodge of that order in the country. At Cynthiana there will be music, a parade, and an address by the Hon. Kimball of Lexington. The parade will start promptly at 1:30 o’clock from in front of the court house and will pass through the principal streets down town. The speaking will be in front of the court house at 2:30 o’clock.

  • I suspect most of you have no idea about the person and the saintly episode that is commemorated each Feb. 14 by friends, family and most importantly, lovers. In fact, there are several versions of how the most romantic Saint became a commercial success.

    One story about St. Valentine has its origins in third century Rome where the Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage for young single men because he valued them more as young warriors. A priest by the name of Valentine defied the law and continued to secretly marry the young soldiers who were in love.

  • * Log Cabin, Aug. 19, 1910 - “At a meeting of the National Bank of Cynthiana last Saturday, John M. Cromwell, assistant cashier, was elected as cashier to succeed the late James S. Withers. Cromwell has been connected with the bank for most of the time for 27 years. He is one of the most highly regarded business men of our city and in every way thoroughly equipped for the new position.”

  • The Harrison County Extension Office and the Harrison County Beef Cattle Association will be sponsoring a meeting on “Estate Planning for the Farm Community.” This meeting will be held at the Harrison County Extension Office on Tuesday, Feb. 17 beginning at 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. The speaker will be Keith Jefferies who is a tax expert and a member of the Henry County Beef Cattle Association.

  • The Young Farmer Chapter held their regional banquet on Feb. 4 at Golden Corral in Georgetown.

    The local banquet is planned for March 23 at the Harrison County Extension Office.

    Brian Furnish with the Burley Co-op will be the speaker at the Feb. 9 Harrison County YFC meeting.
