  • For just a few short weeks each year, strawberries are abundant. They’re juicy, sweet and, yes, even succulent. They can be found at grocery stores everywhere. But, according to one local strawberry farmer, the best of the much-loved berries are locally grown.
    “They’re picked ripe,” Cynthiana farmer Butch Case said. “They’re sweeter than strawberries that come from California or Florida.”

  • When Avi Bear’s 6-year-old border collie, Zigler, became sick four years ago, his homemade solution became the genesis of his Kentucky Proud dog food business.
    Avi’s brother, Haim, suggested feeding Zigler a special dog food recipe he was making for his sensitive Goldendoodle, Daisy. A trained chef and bakery owner, Avi took the recipe, which was basically home-cooked chicken and rice, and modified it to make it more nutritionally balanced.

    The four unmistakable signs of spring time in Cynthiana, Kentucky: The Cynthiana Democrat’s Home and Garden Show, the opening of the Farmer’s Market at Flat Run Veterans’ Park, dogwoods and tulips in full bloom, and the annual unfurling of the Chicago Cubs flags in the front yard of Jamie and Karan Russell’s home.
