  • Phase 1 sign ups to begin Tuesday

    The Ag Development Board announces the beginning of sign-ups for 2010 Phase I programs. The period will begin on Tuesday, March 30 and conclude on Monday, April 19. This will be the only application period.

    The application process will include answering questions concerning your farming situation. After all applications are in, each application will be graded based upon a key which is established by the Ag Development Board.

  • Indoor seed starting kits available...

    My Christmas present this year was a great little seed starting kit equipped with a tray, green house top and heated mat. The heated mat is the special treat.

    In the past, the seed tray would sit in the not-so-convenient spot in front of the refrigerator where the heat escapes at the bottom. I am very excited about this new source of heat; I have had entire trays of peppers fail because the soil wasn’t warm enough.

  • CAIP funds approved for Harrison Co...

    The Kentucky Agricultural Development Board approves $320,000 in Harrison County Agricultural Development Funds for a County Agricultural Investment Program at their February business meeting. The Harrison County Beef Cattle Association Inc. submitted a proposal to the Harrison County Agricultural Development Council and the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board to provide cost-share incentives to area farmers.

    Katherine Beckett Whalen was born to John and Kelly Whalen of Cynthiana on Feb. 8, 2010 at Harrison Memorial Hospital. She weighed 8 lbs. 3 oz.

  • Extension Leadership Event

    About eight years ago Extension Agents and leaders began talking about having an event similar to the Chamber of Commerce awards that recognize outstanding community leaders. The Extension program would honor men and women who have had a long standing commitment to the Extension Program.  Those folks were to be selected from 4-H or Youth Leadership, involvement in the Ag and Natural Resources, the Community Development or a great impact on the Extension Homemakers and Family and Consumer Sciences program, the 4-H Center or Fair activities.

    The Harrison County Ag Development Board is now announcing the signups for the 2010 Cost Share Programs.  The program signups will begin on Tuesday, March 30 and conclude on Monday, April 19.

    All applications may be picked up at the Harrison County Extension Office between business hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

    Robert Whalen Fain was born to Jami Lee Fain of Cynthiana on Feb. 23, 2010 at Harrison Memorial Hospital. He weighed 8 lbs. 15 oz.

    Lilly Alexandra Spivey was born to Susan and Adam Spivey of Lexington, Ky., on Feb. 1, 2010 at the University of Kentucky. She weighed 8 lbs. 11 oz.

  • Ag tour to Alaska being planned

    For several years citizens of Harrison County have shown a desire to discover the Alaskan Territory and its beauty. A committee has put together initial plans for a trip to Alaska in late July. Final plans have not been made but should be completed later this month. If you have an interest to take part in this trip or hear the details before making your final decision, call the Harrison County Extension Office at 859-234-5510.

  • FSA announces committee election...

    Barry Sims, County Executive Director of the Harrison County Farm Service Agency announces that Ricci Roland has been re-elected to serve a three year term on the Farm Service Agency Committee. His term of office began on Jan. 1, 2010. Mike Stroub will serve as chairperson, Roland will serve as vice chairperson, Thomas Florence Jr. as regular member, and Freda Custard, COC Advisor.

    The Farm Service Agency Committee is responsible for the administration of various Federal Farm programs including Price Support, Conservation and Farm Loan Programs.

  • Potato crop first to be planted in...

    Once again I am proud to say that our potato crop lasted from March 2009 to March 2010. It’s time to start it all over again, thank goodness. I am really ready to get my hands in the soil, once it dries out a bit. First thing first:  while I always shoot for a mid-March planting of selected seed potatoes we must consider the condition of the soil.  Don’t start digging if the soil is too wet. Be patient and only work once the soil is friable.

  • Extension Center to host Vegetable...

    The Harrison County Extension Office will be sponsoring a Vegetable Production meeting on Thursday, March 11, 7 p.m. at the Extension Office.

    This meeting is open to anyone interested in vegetable gardening. If you have a small garden in your backyard, or you will be growing vegetables to sell at the local Farmer’s Market or you are interested in growing commercial vegetables, this will be an excellent opportunity for you.

    * Log Cabin, Jan. 31, 1913 -- “Attorney Harry Bailey Shot to Death - A terrible tragedy was enacted in the midst of a large court day crowd in the heart of Cynthiana, Monday afternoon at about 2:30 o’clock when Attorney Harry Bailey of Cynthiana was shot down by Newt Arnold of Paris and died almost instantly. The tragedy occurred in front of the Farmers National Bank on Pike Street near the corner of Main.

  • Pepe la Pew wasn’t so far...

    Remember Pepe la Pew, the cartoon skunk? Pepe would follow the lovely black feline Penelope Pussycat, who, in some episodes painted a white stripe on her back to escape dog harassment and in others she got it by accident by scooting under a newly painted white fence. 

    In any case, Pepe was a persistent suitor. I loved this classic cartoon as a child but now I have an entirely different respect for Pepe’s sensibilites. His character was not so far off from a real skunk’s unabashed pursuit of love this time of the year.
