Berry couple escape burning home last Thursday morning

Electrical issues was the contributing factor to a Thursday morning fire in Berry.

Berry, which has seen its fair share of fires in the past few years, caught a lucky break when firefighters were able to limit the amount of damage to a Second Street Berry home.

Trooper demonstrates K9 prowess at Citizens Police Academy

Tpr. Ryan Gosser brought his canine drug partner to the Kentucky State Police Citizens’ Police Academy, which is held at the Licking Valley campus. He demonstrated how the dog will locate drugs in a vehicle and be rewarded by playing with a ball. 

   

Good show for lilacs this year

Last year I spent some time rejuvenating, if you will, our ‘Miss Kim’ lilac.
It had gone years without any maintenance pruning, just never making the priority list for chores out at the farm.
Although “Miss Kim” is considered a dwarf variety and needs less maintenance, it was in need of some serious reduction.
Last spring after the shrub finished blooming, I removed about one-third of the oldest wood, which resulted in new growth so this year the lilac looks great.

Public banned from public meeting

The Commission on Aging Board of Directors met Thursday afternoon and immediately went into a closed session.
The commission was to meet with an IRS representative to ask that penalties and interest on what is now nearly $60,000 in unpaid payroll taxes be waived.
Under Kentucky law there are exemptions that allow for closed sessions if the criteria is met.
The Cynthiana Democrat objected to the closing a public meeting under the exemptions presented by Mayor Steve Moses.

Get happy, part two

A few weeks back I wrote about “What’s making me happy,” which got a great response from people.
Some sent emails or stopped me in the market to tell me what’s making them happy. Seems everyone was riding the happiness train.
But then someone pointed out that God never promised us happiness and that those who pursue it never obtain it.
There’s always a buzz kill in every crowd.
Still, the person had a good point and one worth exploring.

Bluegrass Warhorses to hold
tryouts/season tickets on sale now
The first-ever open player tryout for the newly established Bluegrass Warhorses Indoor Football team will be held on June 1 at Toyota Stadium in Georgetown. Players at all positions will be evaluated at the tryouts including kickers. Registration for non-kickers is at 10 a.m. with the kickers signing in at 11 a.m.

Violence in sports, how long until it happens here

I spent Monday this week working in Indiana, which gives me a lot of time to listen to the radio while in the car.
I listen mainly to sports radio but now and then will venture over to the news, which generally depresses me so I don’t listen for any long periods of time.
Monday the news had quite a bit about the soccer official who was killed when an irate player hit him in the side of the head and killed him on April 27 in Utah.
