Fillies end regular season with region rivals, tough Lexington games

The Harrison County Fillies are closing out the regular season with a mixture of district and region rivals and some tough games in Lexington.
Coach Christine Garnett’s Fillies began the prelude to the season with a Thursday game with district opponent Pendleton County at Shirley Field in the annual Cancer Awareness Game.  
It was a four-inning affair with the Fillies banging out 14 hits and 15 runs in their four at bats.  
Senior Ashley Coppage was four-for-four to lead the Harrison County attack.  

Breds runners up, Fillies 5th in Regional Track Meet

“We finished region champs last year and runners up this, and I am extremely proud of this group of athletes,” said Thorobreds Track Coach Robert Walker. “Considering the people we lost to graduation and those that fell by the wayside this year this group showed a lot of heart. We had people who were injured competing and giving their all.”

Thorobreds trap Bearcats 5-2

BHarrison County improved its 2013 baseball record to 18-5 on Thursday as they defeated Anderson County’s Bearcats 5-2 in a game on the Hilltop.  
The Bearcats (7-16) trailed throughout the game as senior hurler Jordan Martin held them to four hits in his six innings of work.  
Anderson County scored both of its runs in the top of the seventh off relief pitcher Gus Garrison, who gave up a home run to junior lead off hitter Brandon Eliadis after he had walked pinch hitter Christian Shepherd.

Berry couple escape burning home last Thursday morning

Electrical issues was the contributing factor to a Thursday morning fire in Berry.

Berry, which has seen its fair share of fires in the past few years, caught a lucky break when firefighters were able to limit the amount of damage to a Second Street Berry home.

Public banned from public meeting

The Commission on Aging Board of Directors met Thursday afternoon and immediately went into a closed session.
The commission was to meet with an IRS representative to ask that penalties and interest on what is now nearly $60,000 in unpaid payroll taxes be waived.
Under Kentucky law there are exemptions that allow for closed sessions if the criteria is met.
The Cynthiana Democrat objected to the closing a public meeting under the exemptions presented by Mayor Steve Moses.

Bluegrass Warhorses to hold
tryouts/season tickets on sale now
The first-ever open player tryout for the newly established Bluegrass Warhorses Indoor Football team will be held on June 1 at Toyota Stadium in Georgetown. Players at all positions will be evaluated at the tryouts including kickers. Registration for non-kickers is at 10 a.m. with the kickers signing in at 11 a.m.

Violence in sports, how long until it happens here

I spent Monday this week working in Indiana, which gives me a lot of time to listen to the radio while in the car.
I listen mainly to sports radio but now and then will venture over to the news, which generally depresses me so I don’t listen for any long periods of time.
Monday the news had quite a bit about the soccer official who was killed when an irate player hit him in the side of the head and killed him on April 27 in Utah.

Track teams finish season strong, look forward to Regional meet Saturday

The Harrison County High School Thorobreds and the Fillies completed the 2013 track regular season last week with a Tuesday meet at Scott County and a Saturday meet in Lexington at Bryan Station.
The Thorobreds will be going into the regional this Saturday with a couple of strong showings behind them as they won the 11-team boys’ meet at Scott County and finished fourth in the 11-team meet on Saturday.
Saturday’s meet had four of the Lexington schools as well as Scott County and Western Hills among others in the highly competitive meet.
