  • A prosecutor’s perspective

    It’s the time of year that we gather together with our friends and family and celebrate the holidays. It’s also the time of year when you are more likely to be the victim of theft, burglary and fraud.  
    Thefts from vehicles and home burglaries peak in November and December.  Here are some tips on how you can avoid becoming a victim this holiday season.  
    When shopping, lock your vehicle and don’t leave items like gifts, cell phones, tablets, laptops, purses, and shopping bags visible in your car.

    The answer to questions raised in editor Becky Barnes’ column last week are as follows:
    No responsibility and no consequences.
    I was a social worker for one year, a probation and parole officer for four years and a cop for 21 years.
    When I was in grade school, if you did not pass you repeated the grade. Some in that group were lazy, others were inept. The lazy were motivated, the inept were sent to special classes. It worked.

  • A Disservice to Children

    I’ve witnessed more than most in my 20-plus years as a student and 27 years as a teacher.
    Some of it good, some of it not-so-good.
    Virtually all, well-intentioned.
    As a student, I experienced the “open classroom concept” and  “modular” scheduling while growing up in Carrollton.

    With candy canes, bright lights and Christmas trees in every window, the season is unmistakable. The time when the world, or our corner of it, seems to be just a bit kinder, with smiles much wider and toes tapping to joyous music.
