Today's Opinions

  • Thanks to those who shared their talents

    To the editor:
The Benefit Concert held downtown last Thursday night with award-winning vocalist Mark Bishop was an amazing demonstration of how a community can come together to show love and support for others.
There were huge totes filled with food to feed the hungry, gloves and winter scarves to give warmth from the cold and a sizable donation to help those in crisis.

  • Thanks to those who gave to OCC

Thanks to those who gave to OCC

    To the editor:
Operation Christmas Child, Harrison County Division, would like to say a big thank you to each and every one who participated in the Operation Christmas Child ministry.  This year’s goal was 1,500.  We are very excited to say we passed that mark and Harrison County collected 2,177 boxes.
These boxes will be part of over eight million collected by Samaritan’s Purse and distributed to over 100 countries over the world.

  • And, the No. 1 Christmas song of all time is...

I’m a sucker for Christmas tunes. When select radio stations begin their seasonal foray to get us all in the shopping mood, I’m all in.
For two solid months out of the year, my car radio is set so that I do not miss Alvin, Simon and Theodore chiming “The Chipmunk Song.”
I thought it would be easy to pin down my top 10 Christmas songs... after all, I have done plenty of “research.”

  • Christmas movies that should be in everyone’s collection

    “You’ll shoot your eye out.”
“Look Daddy, teacher says, every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings.”
I think you all know where I am going with this, and for those who have no idea of what is going on, shame on you.
For those Christmas movie junkies, like myself, we find ourselves watching more and more Christmas-based movies this time of year, which I don’t understand because they are good enough to watch all year long.

  • Happy Holidays from the Chad Pruitt family

    To the editor:
To all of the great people of Harrison County and the Harrison County School System, Happy Holidays on behalf of me and my family.
Whenever I am asked where my favorite place to work in education was, I will say, without hesitation, Harrison County High School. The people in Cynthiana are great people and I do miss you all very much. There is not one day that goes by that I think about the great times I had serving as a school administrator at HCHS as well as eating up some fried green tomatoes at Biancke’s.

  • Double nickle weather will greet weekend parade

It’s supposed to be 55 degrees and partly sunny Saturday afternoon when Cynthiana’s annual Christmas parade rolls through Cynthiana.
The double nickels will be balmy compared to some Christmas parades past.
I believe I’ve covered the parades since the beginning of time, well maybe not that long, but certainly my fair share.
I’ve stood on Pike Street while a brisk wind would deal snow flakes through the buildings and land them peacefully in the path of floats and horses.

  • Tis the season for givinig

FRANKFORT – There is never a bad time to count our blessings, but with Thanksgiving upon us, this time of year especially welcomes a look back on the positive things in our lives.
I know it has been tough for far too long for many families because of the economy, and yet I am heartened that our sense of charity has never wavered.
According to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 63 million Americans volunteered at least once last year, and each spent 52 hours on average helping others.

  • The holiday season is more about what we already have

I celebrated my 25th birthday this past week. I like to think of it as an age where I finally catch an insurance break but my wife was quick to point out that I am now a quarter of century old.
Once those hurtful however true words were spoken and her little cackling subdued, I began to think about how right she was... and I will never admit it ever again as long as I live.
I don’t feel older at all, if anything I feel as young as I did when I turned 18 to be honest.
