  • Community support is a precious gift to youth

“It takes a village to raise a child.”

Our work at The Cynthiana Democrat has recently been taken over by the activities and achievements of our county’s youth. Whether it’s end-of-the-year academic awards, a run in the state baseball tournament or graduation, it seems to be the season for kids.

Not that I’m complaining... I would rather sit through five awards ceremonies than one board meeting (no offense city commissioners). Kids are just... fun.

And it’s true... Harrison County, in general, prides itself on its youth.

  • Don’t throw stones, restore souls instead

I don’t often comment on current events in the news in this column, mainly because by the time it’s printed the news is old. Plus, much smarter and more insightful people have already written everything there is to be said.

However, I’m going to add my two cents to the conversation about Steve McNair, the ex-NFL quarterback who was found shot to death in an apparent murder-suicide.

The married Steve McNair who was shot by his 20-year-old girlfriend.

  • Kelat community should be treated as part of county

    To the editor:

I was in Kelat the day those men were driving drunk and reckless. If it hadn’t been raining that afternoon, my daughter would have been riding her bike there. Would the deputies have made time to come if she had been hit by these men?

Nine seconds after I pulled off to head to town - and this is on video - one of the drivers ran a stop sign. If I had left a few seconds later, I would have been hit. The cops were called and nothing was done. Yet in Cynthiana, if a child skateboards on the wrong road, they are immediately in trouble. How fair is that?

  • Sign petition to stop Freedom of Choice Act and abortion

    To the editor:

A bill called the “Freedom of Choice Act” (FOCA) is presently in the works of passing through Congress.

FOCA is a pro-abortion agenda, proposing the following:

•Taxpayers will be required to fund abortion for any reason.

•Hospitals and healthcare professionals will be required to provide abortions, in addition to abortion clinics.

•Employer health insurance plans will be required to cover abortion.

•Organizations that perform and promote abortions will be funded.

  • ‘The sleep of death is not the end, but only the beginning’

Only my friend Tara could pull off a boisterous, joyful memorial service.

Her mother, Kaye Reynolds, died May 30 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Her memorial service was July 3.

Tara had requested that people dress joyously colorful, so there were a lot of reds and greens and blues. Her mother had a flamboyant spirit, much like Tara.

  • Kelat community has been overlooked for too long

    To the editor:

I have lived in the small community of Kelat for 23 years. I raised my children here and three of my grandchildren have lived here most of their lives. Has Cynthiana forgot this is a part of their county too?

  • Pastor visits former Cynthiana Presbyterian minister in Ohio

    To the editor:

During the recent Fourth of July weekend, as the nation celebrated Independence Day, my wife and I were compelled to visit Rev. Larry Bowald and his family in their new town of residence - Canfield, Ohio. We could not think of a better way to spend such a festive occasion than with a family that is so dear to the Cynthiana community and us.

  • Citizens must educate themselves to protect freedoms

    To the editor:

I am just your run-of-the-mill average citizen and lately, I have found a need to be more informed about my country; past, present, and its possible future. I guess my grandchildren have something to do with it. I want them to grow up in a free and prosperous America, with all its advantages and individual freedoms, as I did.
