  • Viaduct weight restriction needs signage, explanation

    To the editor:

    As a truck driver, I wonder how a city or state can claim a bridge unsafe. If the U.S. 27 bridge over the railroad tracks on the north end of town is now said to be a 15 ton bridge, where are the DETOUR signs? Where are the signs stating that this bridge is unsafe for trucks?

On the 40th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther Kings I Have a Dream speech, at the Democratic National Convention, Sen. Barrack Obama will become the partys official nominee for president.

  • Public can help curb litter problems in Harrison County

    To the editor:

    The State of Kentucky has made littering punishable by up to a $500 fine and or 12 months in jail. A fine and hours of community service such as picking up trash by the roadsides is the most common punishment designated by the courts. Citizens can enforce this ordinance by reporting the offender to the police (859-234-7100) in the Cynthiana city limits, or if outside the city limits, the sheriff (859-234-7135) and providing the following information:

    Vehicle License Number:

    Vehicle Description (make, model, color):

  • Staff at HMH makes experience enjoyable

    To the editor:

    On Sunday, June 22, 2008, I delivered my third child by C-section at Harrison Memorial Hospital.

    My husband and I could not be happier with the care we received. Everyone was knowledgeable, gracious and caring. The wonderful OB and OR nurses eased my worries as I prepared to have my son one month earlier than anticipated. I can never say thank you enough to Dr. Clarke, Dr. Harpel and the staff at HMH.

  • Committee thanks local businesses for help

    To the editor:

    The Harrison County Youth Livestock committee would like to express a huge thank you to the local businesses that continue to support the Harrison County youth.

    We recently held a fun show at the Harrison County Fair grounds. The participants had the opportunity to bring out their livestock project and practice grooming and showing their animal prior to the fair.

  • St. Edward acting to remain where it is now

    To the editor:

    In December, 2006 the parishioners of St. Edward Church met to discuss its future. Staff and parishioners recognized that our present campus size does not allow for additional facilities and have sufficient parking.

    At that meeting parishioners agreed that we would stay at our present location and buy adjacent properties as they became available. This option was chosen instead of property out of town and moving from our spiritual and historic roots.

  • Cicadas' sounds were music to my ears

    On a recent Friday afternoon I was leaving the Licking Valley Campus where I work, when I saw our Bradford Pear tree working alive with activity.

    A closer inspection revealed hundreds of singing cicadas. I grabbed my camera out of the car and climbed under the lower limbs of the tree to get a better look.

    Amazing.

    I started shooting pictures while my colleague Debbie Gill gasped, "What are you doing?" She doesn't like cicadas.
