  • Not exactly a David vs. Goliath but pretty close

Well, I made it through my first-ever strongman contest and it wasn’t a total bust... other than my head.
Those who know me well, know that I have been working with a local talented strongman competitor.
I met Rob McCann a few years ago when he held Harrison County’s first Kentucky’s Strongest Man competition at Lenono’s parking lot.
I went to take pictures of the event and you know how the story goes, I was hooked on the idea of lifting really heavy things like the pros did.

  • I’m livin’ a tomato dream; don’t wake me

Last year I elaborated on the woes of my “garden” and the tomatoes it didn’t produce.
It’s only fitting that I come back with my Year Two assessment.
As you may or may not remember, my son made an 8-by-8 raised bed for me last year as part of my Mothers’ Day gift.
I planted possibly too many plants in the limited area. That, combined with too much rain and water from the hose, made for less than desirable produce.

  • Handy House owner had ties to President Lincoln

    By Christopher L. Starr,
    Guest Columnist
In 2003, the City of Cynthiana and Harrison County jointly purchased the Handy farm to build Veterans Park.
The park’s Master Plan indicated that the only place on the 120-acre parcel for a public swimming pool was the 2,000 sf footprint of the Handy House – a house that has stood majestically on the hill overlooking the Cynthiana valley for almost 200 years.

  • More free cat and dog spay/neuters

    To the editor:
I am writing to tell your readers about a wonderful monetary grant the Humane Society of Harrison County has received from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Because of this new funding we have been able to increase the number of free cat and dog spay/neuters we do monthly from 24 to 30 in our spay/neuter drawing program. All quality veterinary care is provided by Brooks Animal Clinic and Harrison Vet Clinic.

  • Celebrating 20 Years of Kid’s College

    To the editor:
Kids College 2012 was wildly successful. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the 159 children who attended Kids College this year as well as their parents for allowing them to participate.
The children were able to experience a variety of classes. Some classes where familiar favorites from the past and some brand new. This program has grown into a community favorite over the 20 years that it has been offered and that would not be possible without the help of many people.

  • Good luck to students and faculty

So where in the world did our summer go?
Recently I was talking to a friend from high school who now works in the Harrison County School System.
Aside from the general conversation about what we had been doing lately, the subject of how summer had flown by became the main focus of our conversation.
Despite getting out of school for the summer in record timing, it seems that students nonetheless were just getting used to not waking up early to catch a ride on the bus to school.
