  • Back to the future: resuming county coverage

     With Donald Richie’s recent resignation and Kate Darnell’s hiring, it was time to re-evaluate the “news beats” for Kate and I.

    For years the city beat has been mine. In fact, at one time, I covered both city and county from their police and sheriff’s departments to their governing bodies.

    When I first began covering the Harrison County Fiscal Court, Judge Russell Stephens herded the eight magistrates into the back room of the courthouse. That room is now used as Judge Alex Barnett’s office.

  • Phone fraud hurts business

    To the Editor:

    In 1995, after recovering from cerebral hemorrhage, I made Nannette’s beer cheese at Ken’s New Market. Everyone liked it so well, I started making and selling it. Connie and Joe Lemons sold it to help me out with my bills.

    Giving some to the Lions Club Auction one night, someone reported me to the health department. So, I went to the state and got my license and permit to sell it. I am still in business this year (2008).

  • Public service should not mean self-service

    On Monday morning, I turned in my notice to resign as news writer here at The Cynthiana Democrat.

    Next Friday, Nov. 21, will be my last day.

    It was a hard decision, I love this job and the people I’ve worked with over the past five (well, almost five) years. But as my downtown studio grows, I find balancing the two jobs impossible.

    The people of Cynthiana have responded well to my work and I’m not able to serve them to my best ability with things as they have been.

  • Mentor paves the way for new reporter

    It’s hard to sit at this desk and write and not think about the person who used to sit at this desk and write.

    I’ve been blessed to acquire many journalism mentors. And while I studied journalism at Western Kentucky University, most of my true education took place in the same room I now consider my office.

    While I’m so excited to work for the paper I called home for many summers and a winter, it’s also a little sad. My hire was only brought about because of Donald Richie’s resignation.
