  • Beefing up on 2013 General Assembly plans

The General Assembly returned to the capitol last week, kicking off another legislative session as it always does in odd-numbered years: electing House and Senate leaders and establishing membership of the various committees for the next two years.
I’m proud to say that I will have the opportunity to serve again as chairman of the House Agriculture and Small Business Committee, which gives me a strong voice in setting the state’s policy in these two areas.

  • School Board Recognition Month

    To the editor:
The people of Cynthiana and Harrison County are fortunate to have chosen a group of their fellow citizens to take responsibility for the community’s most precious resource and a key to its future – children and their educational opportunities.
Mary June Brunker, Kristy Carey, Gary Lizer, Ed Taylor, and Dr. Don Stephens have agreed to serve this community because they care about those kids and their futures. And they serve at minimal compensation for maximum responsibilities, often under clouds of misunderstanding.

  • America is headed down hill

    To the editor:
I look at the path American is going down today, and while it doesn’t scare me because I know God is still in control, and always will be, it does disturb me to think about the future generations.

  • Make it important to be involved in your government

A new year has begun and one question we should all ask ourselves is... Are we going to help change anything for the better?
I have been working for The Cynthiana Democrat for over two years now.
During the first months of my employment, I took on the task of following the Harrison County Fiscal Court meetings.
A major observation that I feel that I am more than qualified in making is the lack of community interest in what goes on in the meetings twice a month.

    Praises to BGE

    To the editor:
I would like to express my appreciation for all workers with Bluegrass Energy who worked around the clock to restore electricity to Harrison County.  I especially would like to commend the dispatchers who took calls from customers, they were very nice and explained the situation as they knew it.  I know it was difficult for them, and that customers can be very demanding and rude, (not that I would ever be, LOL). Again, thanks.

  • Strange items are clogging the sewers

I remember thinking “Eweh” several years ago when I heard about the man who inadvertently dropped his dentures in the toilet but was able to retrieve them a few days later at Cynthiana’s Waste Water Treatment Plant.
Why would you want those suckers back?
Oh the places they’ve traveled! The last place they would travel would be the waste water treatment plant as far as I would have been concerned.
No. He popped those babies into some Polident and right back onto his gums they nestled.
