  • A pat on the back for not raising taxes

    To the editor:
I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Harrison County Fiscal Court for not raising our property taxes this year. They have recognized the fact that raising taxes will adversely affect our community in these hard economic times.

  • A personal thanks to the Harrison County Fiscal Court

    To the editor:
I want to personally thank the Harrison County Fiscal Court for considering the current economic condition and voting to keep the tax rate the same as last year. A lot of the surrounding counties voted to increase the tax rate. We all should be proud of the current makeup of the court, as it includes youthful vision/initiative and aged wisdom (sorry, I had to say that).

  • The making of a better tomorrow

The making of a better tomorrow

    To the editor:
There is an old saying that goes, “He who fails to plan, plans to fail.” I believe every one of us can think of a time in our lives when we looked back after a failure or unforeseen event and wished that we had planned better. I know I have.
A person who is going places and advancing in life usually has a game plan and an idea of where he or she wants to be in the future. As a city, we have to do this too.

  • Community theater gives small town taste of big city

The arts are strong in the community, just ask anyone who goes to the theater.
I have always enjoyed theater and watching plays and musicals.
I was into theater, especially in high school when Laura Stephens cornered me and told me how I WAS going to be in her first musical “State Fair.”
Stephens, a former student of the well-known drama coach Bill Caywood, looked to bring theater and arts back to Harrison County High School after a long drought of no student plays.

  • Rugby World Cup starts on Sept. 9

    To the editor:
If you like sports, instead of games played by over-paid prima-donnas, you might be interested in the fact that the Rugby World Cup starts on Sept. 9, 2011.
This sport takes place all over the world and in many U.S. colleges and high schools. Of the teams participating in the world cup, you’ll get the best teams in the world which include our National team, the Eagles. While they’re one of the only amatueu teams, (they do have a few team members associated with professional teams). They have a lot of heart and don’t give up.

  • The camping bug has taken a bite outa me

    I’m going camping this weekend.
My dad and step mom are what true Floridians call “Snowbirds.” They usually launch for the sunny south around the first of October.
So this weekend will be the last hoorah before they take flight.
    As I said, I’m a camping fan.
Well, as best you can be with air conditioning, mattresses, porcelain and running water.

  • Remember the pyramid...the food one that is

Sometimes it is difficult to talk about the problems that face our community, especially when kids are involved.
I was recently at the schools taking pictures for the first day back to school.
The kids, I must admit, were really cute. As they swarmed off the buses with their Sponge Bob Square Pants and Hello Kitty backpacks and confused-looking faces, something caught my attention very quickly.
