  • Singing for our unsung heroes

Hello, everybody. How are you doing with the proposal that each of us do one thing, big or little, to make our community better?
If you have taken up this cause, I would love to know about it so I could share it with others. Often when a few step forward, more will follow.
Send me an email, Bruce.Florence@kctcs.edu, or drop a note to the Democrat, and tell me if you have decided on ‘your one thing,’ or have already done your ‘one’ thing to make your community stronger, prettier, or more inviting for all of us.

  • A parent’s nightmare, 10 years later

It will be 10 years ago on Sunday that an early morning phone call shattered my world.
My then-22-year-old daughter, Erin, was screaming into the phone that she was hurt. She needed me. She was crying. And, she was in pain.
It may have been 10 years ago, but I remember it as if it happened yesterday.
It was Feb. 14, 2006. I was taking Seth to school at HCHS where he was a sophomore. We were planning to stop at Ken’s for their fabulous donuts when the call came through.

    To the editor:
If any of your readers know the whereabouts of an old Bell Family Bible with family data going back to 1800 or so, please let me know. I am trying to connect father to son as follows:
John Bell was born 1779; died 1856 in Harrison County, Ky.; (married Frances Minton 1804), Orange County, Va.). He came to Harrison County about 1825-1830 from Fleming County, Ky. His son, John B. Bell, was born 1805 in Fleming County, Ky., and died 1901 in Harrison County, Ky., (married Sarah Pock in 1830, Harrison County, Ky.).

The Kentucky Republican presidential caucus will be held on Saturday, March 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The one Harrison County location will be the Westside Elementary School gym.
Any Republican who will be unable to vote in person may vote by absentee. The easiest way to apply for an absentee ballot is to go to the website at rpk.org/caucus, hit the “how” button on the first page, then hit the “absentee application” button on the second page to download and print.
