  • Countering recent primary election voting letter

    To the editor:
I am writing in response to “Primary elections should be open to all voters.”
The author of that  letter stated  that “Primaries are not for the parties, they are for the voters  and all voters pay for them  and should have the right to participate in them.”
    I must disagree.

  • Emmy Lou was a diva, a pest, a silly, tail-wagging pup

If I had an exotic bird as a pet, it would be more likely to outlive me.
But, I didn’t. I had an 11-year-old maltese whose name followed the family’s Wizard of Oz theme. She was tagged with Auntie Em as a puppy and that evolved into Emmy Lou over the years.
    She was a pest.
She would lick the lotion off my legs. She would get under foot while I was trying to cook. She always needed to “go out” at the most dramatic point of any television show.

Sir, you stated you recalled your students declining to stand for the anthem and pledge years ago. When you asked them why “none gave a solid reason why...”
Recently I saw a TV program on this subject with several black guests an a white moderator. The guests spoke at length about abuse, racism, and things that need to change. When the moderator asked for details all the guests could say was “if you do not know, we can not explain it.”

We send a very special thank you to Harrison County Sheriff Shain Stephens for hosting the first annual Charity Golf Scramble to benefit the Kentucky Sheriff’s Boys and Girls Ranch on Friday, Sept. 8, 2017. Sheriff Stephens’ support of this event ensures we continue to reach Kentucky’s youth in a positive manner.

    Are you an Independent voter?
Are you tired of being refused the opportunity to vote in Kentucky primary elections?
Openprimaries.org is a national organization working to make open primaries available in all 50 states and you should take up the challenge to make them a reality here.
Kentucky is one of only 17 states which do not permit open primaries and recent national polls have found that as much as 43 percent of the electorate considers itself as Independent.  More and more young voters are listing themselves as Independent.

The words small and big are definitely an understatement to me. I recently moved from Cynthiana, Kentucky to Orlando, Florida to attend Rollins College, where I plan on majoring in chemical engineering and then continuing to grad school at Washington University.
Towards the end of my senior year in high school I knew that I had a very big decision to make on where I wanted to further my education.
