  • State mandates leaving seniors high and dry

    To the editor:

    A special advisory commission of senior citizens was held in Frankfort on May 8-9, 2008.

    The Legislative Research Commission (LRC) is facing many problems due to mandates of Gov. Steve Beshear. The keynote speaker for this meeting was Commissioner Anderson, Department of Aging and Independent living, explaining results of a two to 12 percent reduction in monies and how this will affect not only her staff, but loss of monies so desperately needed for senior citizens centers.

  • Zoning rules should clarify when a farm is a business

    To the editor:

    My husband and I live on Ky. Hwy. 1743. We knew that, for various reasons, we would be adding an additional garage to the property. After doing some research we decided to have one built by Custom Wood. Adding an additional building meant getting a building permit, which we did.

  • Farmer's Market offers fresh choices to local consumers

    To the editor:

    In Harrison County there are many unknown or underused treasures. Among them is the Harrison County Farmer's Market.

    Started eight years ago by a group of farmers who wanted to provide you, the citizens of Harrison County, with produce that is much fresher than that which is trucked in from great distances, safer than that which is grown in foreign places with questionable and unregulated practices and healthier than that which has sat for days after harvest.

  • Recreation Task Force moving toward goals for Oddville park

    To the editor:

    The Recreation Task Force of Harrison County Tomorrow would like to thank the individuals and businesses of Harrison County who have so generously donated to the park on Oddville Avenue. With a total of $2,510 thus far, we are well on our way to purchasing picnic tables, benches, and trash receptacles. We encourage all to donate any amount you can for this project. Its never too late.

  • Annual Homemakers Day is set for Friday, May 9, at courthouse

    To the editor:

    On Friday, May 9, 2008, the Harrison County Homemakers Day Celebration will be held on the courthouse square from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

    Our Homemakers are very talented. At the bake sale tent will be cakes, pies, candy, sweet breads, yeast breads, and rolls. All homemade by some of the best cooks in the county. At the Green Thumb Fair tent homemakers will be sharing cuttings from their gardens, house plants, bedding plants, and bulbs. Talk about green thumbs.

  • More to be done in fight against drugs

    To the editor:

    On behalf of Champions For A Drug-Free Harrison County and the Bourbon/Harrison Kentucky Agency For Substance Abuse Policy (KY-ASAP), we would like to express our appreciation for the communitys response and attendance at the Town Hall meeting on underage drinking.

    Our young people are at great risk for substance abuse and dependence. We, as a community, have the responsibility to educate and support each other in the battle to combat such risks to our quality of life.

  • Fair wages should be a high priority

    To the editor:

    On March 6, the Paycheck Fairness Act was re-introduced in the U.S. Congress by Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.).

    According to the latest U.S. Census Bureau data, women continue to receive unequal pay for the same work. On average women earn 77 cents for every dollar a man makes.

    On Tuesday, April 22, 2008 the Licking Valley Business Professional Women (BPW), a local organization, will join thousands of women from across the United States in a national day of action against unfair pay called Equal Pay Day.

  • Maybe clean up will spawn more community pride

    To the editor:

    After reading Mr. Teaters account of his day spent cleaning up Cynthiana, I felt compelled to write about my day as well.

    I was not born and raised in Harrison County but my husband was. When my husband first brought me to Cynthiana in 1996, I fell in love with this town. In 2004, when he left active duty Army, I knew this was the place where we were going to raise our children.

  • Clean up days set for August 5, 6

    To the editor:

    The Welcoming Climate Committee for Harrison County Tomorrow has taken the results of your survey seriously.

    In the nine-page report (front and back) the number one comment were the two words - clean up. This phrase alone was utilized over 140 times in the survey. Other related terms were beautification, restore, neat aesthetic community, attractive county and town, community pride, nicer superficial appearance of buildings, spruce up, reclaim and so forth. The people have spoken so now we need to follow up on the words with action.
