She was likely a grand ol’ dame in her prime.
She stood on the hill overlooking the Maiden City. She was there when Cynthiana was under construction. She was there for the centennial celebration and there when water towers began dotting the outer reaches of Cynthiana. She was there when her town flooded.
Unfortunately, she has withered with time and apathy; soon to be just dust in the wind.
For years I have written about the Handy House.

  • Downtown Cynthiana sees an exciting growth

In my books, Cynthiana is starting to boom again. Within the last year, we have had several new businesses locate downtown in our brick-and-mortar storefronts.
This is very important to our community.
Mark Twain famously remarked, “The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated” after a newspaper erroneously reported his passing.
Similarly, the reports of the death of brick-and-mortar stores have been greatly exaggerated.

Shortly after the Constitutional Convention of 1787 completed its work, a woman named Mrs. Powell approached one of the key figures of the convention, Benjamin Franklin, and asked, “Mr. Franklin, what do we have, a republic or a monarchy?”
Franklin didn’t hesitate, “a republic, if we can keep it.”
Simply put, a republic is a form of government where the citizens have the opportunity to elect the officials that will run their government.

  • ‘Scam predators do not care how honest or vulnerable you are, in fact they like you best when you are at your weakest’

Recently I was in a meeting with seven people of different ages, and I realized that they all lived alone. It was not on the meeting agenda, but we drifted into a conversation about having to deal with harassing intrusions into our lives. It was immediately obvious that these threats were causing harmful stress in their lives.
For some time I have not addressed this topic, mainly because I feared it would seem I was taking advantage of my own personal situation. However, I worry that so many innocent people find themselves victim to media predators and worse.

  • The only way to make things better is to get involved

I’m getting just a little bored with of all the Cynthiana-trashing I see and hear.
    Social media is the worse.
People who choose to contribute nothing to Cynthiana and Harrison County continue to bad mouth their hometown.
There are some great things happening in this community.
If the loud-mouthed minority want more to do, want to see less drugs and thugs and want Cynthiana to return to its glory days, then they need to get involved.
Nothing can be gained by sitting on the sideline, grumbling and criticizing.
