  • On the campaign trail

    Will the madness stop?
Each year at election time, the commercials and news clips become almost unbearable. Well, not almost, most assuredly unbearable.
    Enough with the mudslinging!
Tell me why I should vote for your candidate. What makes him qualified for the position?
Also with each election comes the Democrat’s practice of accepting candidate endorsement letters to the editor.
    Highlight the word “endorsement.”

  • Well paid should never complain about wages

As a way of sparking some potential interesting letters to the editor, I would like to offer up the conversation regarding the current situation in the NFL.
    Referees!!!
Love them or hate them, they are just as much part of any game played as the athletes are.
Take referees out of a game and we would be stuck watching a variation of the ultimate fighter in most cases... which could prove to be interesting in some cases.

  • Using dowsing technique to determine melon’s ripeness

Sometimes I’m left scratching my head and feeling like perhaps somewhere there is a camera filming my reaction to some silly situation.
As I’ve said before, this is my second year growing a box garden in my backyard.
Last year it was tomatoes and herbs. This year, tomatoes, watermelon and cantaloupe.
I didn’t know what to expect when I planted the melons. Certainly not that they would overflow the box and stretch into my yard.
    But they did.

  • From White Castle to fine finger foods

“It’s time for football in the Bluegrass!!!”
I never get tired of hearing that chilling phrase or the jets flying over after the National Anthem is played.
Kentucky football, support it or not, is here again.
During my college days, which were highlighted by watching players like Andre’ Woodson, Jacob Tamme, Keenan Burton, Wesley Woodyard, Rafael Little and of course Steve Johnson, I had an opportunity to experience some of the best UK football ever played.

  • Company's coming, put on the shine

When Cynthiana City Commissioner Billy Grayson took office he began a campaign to clean up the city.
He asked business owners and residents to take pride in their property.
“Company’s coming,” he has been heard to say numerous times at city commission meetings.
He explained that if visitors come to Cynthiana, we want to put our best foot forward, much like you would at home if you knew guests were coming.

  • Not exactly a David vs. Goliath but pretty close

Well, I made it through my first-ever strongman contest and it wasn’t a total bust... other than my head.
Those who know me well, know that I have been working with a local talented strongman competitor.
I met Rob McCann a few years ago when he held Harrison County’s first Kentucky’s Strongest Man competition at Lenono’s parking lot.
I went to take pictures of the event and you know how the story goes, I was hooked on the idea of lifting really heavy things like the pros did.

  • I’m livin’ a tomato dream; don’t wake me

Last year I elaborated on the woes of my “garden” and the tomatoes it didn’t produce.
It’s only fitting that I come back with my Year Two assessment.
As you may or may not remember, my son made an 8-by-8 raised bed for me last year as part of my Mothers’ Day gift.
I planted possibly too many plants in the limited area. That, combined with too much rain and water from the hose, made for less than desirable produce.
