  • A lot has changed in the last 40 years

Saturday will mark my 40th year with The Cynthiana Democrat.
I like to think I have learned a lot during those four decades -- some about myself, but mostly about my community.
Everyone has a story to tell. They may not want to tell it, but it’s there nonetheless.

  • Viewpoint

Social media has been alive over the last several days with opinions as to where the blame should lie, concerning the incident over the weekend at the Cincinnati Zoo.
A 4-year-old child slipped away from his parent(s) very briefly, crawled over fencing, scampered through some bushes and eventually fell 15 feet into a moat surrounding the habitat for a 600 pound  African Lowland Silverback gorilla.
The gorilla, named Harambe, was caught on video, protecting the child, although it looked like anything but that in a couple of sequences.

  • REFLECTING ON MEMORIAL DAY

This weekend we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives for this great country. Originally referred to as “Decoration Day,” the holiday originated after the Civil War as Americans would decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers each year. Following WWI it took on new significance and all of America’s wars were from then on included and observed in the holiday we now know as “Memorial Day.”

  • And It All Started With You

How strong is one idea? Can one idea or one person make a difference? The answer of course is yes, and here is one example. The Christmas Tree lighting at Battle Grove Cemetery came about because one person had the idea and suggested that an existing tree have lights. For several years now there is a tree light ceremony  near the entrance and with it folks take on a bit of Christmas spirit.
