  • Nothing personal, just an opinion

    I am often cautioned by my veteran editor/boss when I start writing versus reporting, but when it’s a column, anything is fair game.
    Since I started reporting for the paper, a lot of changes and adjustments have occurred in our community.
    I always try to be unbiased when reporting those changes and adjustments.
    If there is one thing I have learned it is that local government needs no help in finding controversy, so I let them create their own.

  • Do you want to be our friend? Click yes or no

    Who hasn’t dreaded the choosing sides way of teaming up?
    Two “coaches” are selected and then those coaches choose from a pool of wanna-be players until the final player remains and the last coach to choose is stuck with the last player.
    I always feared not being liked enough to be picked in any draft and being the lone player left behind, which in theory would be the lesser athlete, but in reality is the least popular.
    We all want to be liked; from sporting activities to business.
    Life’s just that way.

  • May today be the beginning of a new journey

    Mr. Dotson, school board members, administrators, teachers, parents, family and especially the graduates in the class 2011: Good evening.  
    I first want to thank the class for allowing me to be the speaker this evening. I am honored and will attempt to keep it short and get you out of the heat.
    Just 25 years ago I was in your seats. At that time, we had graduation in the auditorium, the overflow was  in the library and both were extremely crowded. Lots of things have changed over the last 25.

  • Memories are best served with Captain Crunch Bar

    As I recall memories of when I was younger, none are as special to me as the times spent at Oddville Store.
    Not trying to sound too clichéd, but I remember those experiences like they were yesterday.
    It would be 95 degrees outside at our old home on Lower Curry Road. Our yard was basically an old hay field  growing tall with Kentucky 31 Fescue and tons of dandelions.

    Citizens of Cynthiana, do you ever wonder what people travelling through Harrison County think about the condition of our roadways?  
    We want them to think this is one of the greatest places to live.  
    One step toward making this a reality can be easily accomplished if we work together to make our roadways litter free. As residents, we should strive to make our city as beautiful as possible.

  • LVC students commend 10-year-old’s commitment to others

    Jonah Case, an 10-year-old Northside fourth grader, recently visited a college class at the Licking Valley Campus of Maysville Community and Technical College.
    Jonah and LVC students collected aluminum can tabs to support Jarrett’s Joy Cart, a service at Kentucky Children’s Hospital in Lexington.

  • Share your celebrity encounters with our readers

    Vacation season is upon us. And, while the price of gas may be restricting some travel, there is always a chance that you will meet up with a celebrity somewhere along your way.
    If you do, have someone snap of photograph of you and that star. We’d love to show it in The Cynthiana Democrat in a new feature  called Celebrity Encounters.
    If you are going to the Kentucky Speedway this summer, you may run into someone well known in the NASCAR circuit. Get a family member or even a complete stranger to capture the moment.

    Sometimes, I even go outside my comfort zone and try and sound intellectual in discussing a sensitive or important issue within the county or city.
    However, never before have I been sitting at my computer and been led by emotion to share a story with everyone, until now.

  • Readers, let us know what you think about...

    Perhaps you don’t agree with a letter or a column here on the Viewpoint page.
    Maybe you think the newspaper or its editor have taken it to far by printing someone’s opinion.
    In recent weeks I’ve heard some mumbling to that effect.
    My response has to be that I would no more deny publication of a letter to the editor than I would ask a librarian to remove a book from the shelf.
    There is the exception of libel and good taste with regards to letters.
    There are a few rules, but we try to limit those.
