  • Fill the pantry with garden bounty

    During the summer my grocery bills are pretty modest. My vegetable garden keeps us well-supplied in fruits and vegetables. The goal now is to turn the summer bounty into something we can use in the winter, too. I am getting much better at putting up my homegrown produce.

  • Museum Musings

    *Cynthiana Democrat, Nov. 19, 1953 -- The first traffic since Sept. 29 started moving Monday night over the newly erected steel span across Main Licking River at Claysville after the maintenance crew of the State Department of Highways completed laying the flooring of the new span. The new bridge replaces the old covered structure destroyed by fire. Only 45 days were required to erect the new Bailey bridge sections (army surplus material), thus topping the previous bridge building record claimed by the State Highway Department of Georgia which erected a similar span in 70 work days.

  • Farmers National robbed again; escapee caught, charged

    An ever-growing plethora of charges are coming down the line for accused bank robber Jeffrey Pratt.

    Pratt, 30, was caught Monday afternoon at Everybody's Auto Sales on New Circle Road in Lexington, after being on the run for nearly a month.

    He escaped from custody in Robertson County on July 21 while being taken to court. He was there to be arraigned for theft by unlawful taking in connection to the robbery of the Integra Bank in Mt. Olivet.

  • Breds take 2-1 loss against Pendleton Wildcats

    In boys soccer, the Breds lost a heartbreaker to district rival Pendleton County on Tuesday night, 2-1. The host Wildcats scored first, but Harrison County answered with a goal by Jake Jenkins at the 15 minute mark of the second half to knot the score at 1-1.

    Bobby (Feeback) played a nice through ball to Jake who outran a defender to the ball and scored, is how Harrison County coach Nick Hill explained the Breds lone goal.

  • Bad week for HCHS sports

    As far as wins and losses go, it hasnt been the best week for Harrison County High School sports teams.

    However, tough competition and close games should payoff for the Thorobreds and Fillies as their respective seasons progress.

    On Monday night, the Harrison County Fillies ran into a buzz saw and were defeated by a strong Lexington Christian Academy team 4-0 in Lexington.

    The 14th ranked Eagles scored three first-half goals to take control of the game, but Harrison County coach Kim Jenkins was anything but disappointed with the efforts of her team.

  • Rohs to be a Jungle starting tomorrow

    Atop a boulder, Ethan Rognstad holds his fist high.

    Hear me, people of the jungle, he shouts. A hush falls over the area. We are of one blood, you and I.

    The ROHS Acting Troupes Junior Rohsians will present The Jungle Book at Rohs Opera House this weekend.

    Rognstad, who will turn 12 years old on opening night, portrays Mowgli. He is a jungle boy who wandered away from the village when he was too young to know where he was going, Ethan explained. He was taken in and cared for by wolves, and he doesnt know his human family.

  • Cattle round-up

    Dr. Jeff Lehmkuhler spoke to the Harrison County Beef Cattle Association Thursday, Aug. 14, on the subject of sell now or later. Lehmkuhler is taking the place of Dr. John Johns, a cattle nutrition specialist who retired recently. We didnt have any trouble pronouncing or spelling Johns first name or last, but this guy may become Dr. Jeff. He doesnt look like hed mind.

  • Khloe's battle: Newborn fights for her life against cancer

    When the doctor announced to Erik and Ella Fryman that they had a "beautiful, healthy baby girl," they were half right.

    Khloe Fryman is no doubt beautiful. She is 10 pounds and two ounces of grab-your-heart gorgeous. She can turn on a smile that exudes through her eyes one minute, and the next instant, she can pucker up with a quivering lip to let her momma know she needs to do something to make her smile again.

    However, Khloe is not "healthy."

  • Fillies unable to settle Lady Cats

    On Tuesday, while the girls volleyball team dropped a tough decision to Pendleton County in downtown Falmouth, the Fillies volleyball team took one on the chin against the Lady Cats on the hill at Pendleton County High School.

    Coming off easy wins over Nicholas County and East Jessamine to start the regular season, Harrison County was victimized by its inability to settle in and play its game against Pendleton County.

    The host LadyCats won two straight over the Fillies in the best of three series, 25-22 and 25-19.
